The ambulance version has a longer frame and rear body to accommodate stretchers.

I can't find anything that indicates it was. According to OliveDrab.com, by the '68 TM for the M37, there is no mention of an M42 conversion for it.
Also from OliveDrab.com:
The Command Truck M42 is only slightly different from the base model M37 cargo truck. They are not manufactured as a separate model, rather the M42 Command Truck is created by modifying an M37 with the installation of a conversion kit. The M42 conversion kit consists of replacing the standard M37 canvas with these M42 components:
•Body side curtains with windows
•Split rear end curtains
•Map light
•Folding table

Trailer? There's no trailer. If you mean the rear bed cover then both it and the cab cover were included in the M37 kit, so why wouldn't they include them here?
More interesting is if any of the additional parts under the cover needed for the M42 version are included.

There are several in the Arizona MVPA group, including one owned by an EMT volunteer fire fighter. There are big, slow and ungainly. I like them for all those reasons!

As a soldier, I agree, as a young foolish kid with a pick up truck, not so much. I grew out of that fast. The very worst thing I experienced driving my WWII Willys was another car hitting a road kill and the splurt hitting the windshield, and me. Very gross! And on the way to a parade. The only lucky thing about that, it was a small rodent, and not an Elk.

Arizona is not known for rain, but I did get flooded out once crossing the wash near home. I managed to coast out because I was going way to fast in the first place. I only had to wait a few minutes, after the coil dried off it started back up.
Lost a tire years ago to a pot hole, so I know that feeling. I didn't see it in the dark. Had a blow out after hitting what I think was a tool box, that was unpleasant, at 60 mph.
