Revisiting some older builds including the Tamiya Somua 35. On their color painting guide it calls for ‘Sky’ as one of the colors. I just got a Hataka paint set for French armor and one of the colors is Gris Clair Neutre. Would that be the correct color for the Sky color Tamiya calls for?

Gris Clair Neutre is Neutral light grey. Hakata states it can be used as a sky colour around 1937. As there are no WW2 colour photographs to contradict you, go for it Chris

Hi Chris,

I think it's fair to say that these colours are still the subject of research, though much has been uncovered in recent years. The attached may be of some help (taking into account the limits of computer screens)
Would recommend 'Trackstory 11' from Editions du Barbotin

Thank you. That chart is quite useful. Interesting topic the more I get into it.

That was kind of my thought as well. Looking forward to trying these Hataka paints for the first time.

That chart is from "Pentures de Guerre - un Siecle de Camouflage de l'Armee Francaise" by P. Danjou ISBN 978-2-917661-17-8

And it does contain original colour photos showing the very pale blue.

Thank you! Think I found a copy of the book to order.

It's a great book, and the text is in both French and English.

Heartily agreed. If you want to model WW2 French tanks, this is a must have reference.
