54mm

We rarely publish news on figures in 54mm scale, but this vignette is really something special and should prove popular with all WWI fans on Armorama.
Tommy's War is expanding their WWI series of figures with an evocative scene inspired by the painting by Italian artist Fortunino Matania.

TW54VC01 - L Battery Royal Horse Artillery and the action at Néry, 1st September 1914
Scale: 54mm (1/32 scale)
Material: resin (photo etch braces for two figures)
Kit includes: 13 pounder QF gun, carriage limber, 4 figures, full shells, empty shell cases, detailed instruction sheets (12 pages for gun, 8 pages for limber)
Sculptor: Nino Pizzichemi
Box art: Günther Sternberg
Price: £120.00 (including taxes) - price may differ at different retailers

The vignette recreates the scene where the British 1 Cavalry Brigade were attacked by German forces. L Battery, attached to 1 Cavalry, was completely destroyed, less for one gun. The 13-pounder gun manned by Captain Bradbury, WO2 Dorrell, Sergeant Nelson, and Gunners Osbourne and Darbyshire, managed to keep the single gun in action against the three German Batteries and repulsed the German attack. Three members of L Battery were awarded the Victoria Cross for this action: Captain Bradbury (pothumously), Battery Sergeant-Major Dorrell and Sergeant Nelson.

To recreate the scene, not only the 13 pounder QF gun had to be created, but the limber itself as Tommy's War wanted to show the entire scene. Nino Pizzichemi sculpted three gunners, plus one as a casualty (the injured gunner represents Gunner Darbyshire who was knocked unconscious by the same shell that mortally wounded Captain Bradbury).

Included in each set is a newsletter 'News from the Front' which is 8 pages and includes detailed historical information on the battle and the three VC winners, plus more information on each of the guns.

In addition to this scene, the gun and limber are available as individual kits. It was also possible to upgrade the 13 pounder to the 18 pounder, the most widely used British gun of the period, so there are three gun sets (all 54mm resin):

TW54E02 - Ordnance Quick Firing 13 pounder - £50.00

TW54E03 - Ordnance Quick Firing 18 pounder - £50.00

TW54E04 - Carriage Limber (suitable for both 13 and 18 pounder) - £30.00

A well sculpted memory to brave men. Certainly worth collecting. But why 54mm? Nevertheless: thanks for this review, it will certainly create a financial gap in my modeling budget soon.

The classic toy soldier / figure collector scale. If you thought that one was nice, check this one out: Andrea Miniatures::Tank Fight on the Western Front 1916 I'd love to see some new-tooled 1/35 scale British WWI tanks and more 1/35 scale WWI figures. Plastic kit makers should take notice.

That's really tempting. Lovely animation.

Both the gun+crew and the tank fight are dangerous stuff....for my finances that is! High quality indeed!! Cheers Romain

Nice kit, though I am biased having done the 18pdr plus Limber and the Ammunition wagon for Resicast. A few details missing from the TW examples...strange as we were using the same reference material, Trewins book on artillery. As I said....a nice kit with superb figures......but excuse me if I show some bias.

Thank you for all the positive comments. The project took 2 years to complete, so was a real labour of love, but I'm delighted with the results of the detailed gun and the fantastic figures that really bring the scene to life.

Darren, You have some beautiful figures offered on your site. Hopefully you'll give some thought to maybe doing some French and AEF figures. I'd love to see some tankers - British, Canadian, French and American - produced for new WWI tanks that are beginning to appear. The Meng FT-17 and the Takom St. Chamond are surely only the beginning. Some high quality figures to go along with them (and the British rhomboids that can't be far behind) would be most welcome!
