Okay, with the officer wearing the tam I could guess the nationality of te soldiers, but the shaggy gillie suit made that difficult. Not expected unless that's some form of winter suit. Though unexpected, still wonderfully posed.

On initially looking at it it looks to be a nice little vignette. However what spoils it for me is two of the figures wearing some sort of fur coat and both smoking clay pipes. While I have no doubt pipes were smoked, cigarettes were much more common. It would have looked more effective and more realistic if they'd been in normal uniforms or one in a fur coat the others in uniform. It just doesn't work for me.

erichvon, I second your opinion. I couldn't put my finger on what I didn't like about it, but you said it perfectly.

That was supposed to be a fur coat? Now that would be fun to try and keep clean in a trench full of mud and water! As to the pipe vs cig: at that time period gentlemen (ie: officer) probably preferred pipes for their inherent "style". Go figure.

The vignette look to be inspired in part by this photo with just one pipe smoker whose headgear is similar to the figure on the right of the vignette with the periscope. The "Fur" coats are, I think, meant to represent a rough sheepskin jacket that was issued to some units and yes I imagine it was hard to keep clean

As for the pipe smokers, well pipes were more popular in the trenches than you might think - they're more economical, they don't have a glowing tip and you don't get other soldiers trying to cadge a smoke off you. Pipe smoking also tends to be contagious in small units as you can see in these photos A practice that survived at least into ww2

I love all the AC figure, nace job!!! At least in my region ,the South of the Alps, at that time specially between the poor the pipe was more popular and cheap, cigarette was more "trendy" in city and upper-midle class, after the war have become much more popular because often were provided by the army during the war
