Introduction:

Black Army Models is a small figure company from Hungary with a really interesting business strategy to produce figures different than the usual 1/35 scale resin offerings: civilians, guerilla fighters and insurgents from various modern conflicts… The latest release from Black Army is a figure depicting Syrian rebel.

Review:

The figure is packed in a hard cardboard box, with the zip-lock bag containing all the figure pieces. The box features Black Army Models logo and a small box art picture of the painted figure, crediting Gabor Szabo as both the sculptor and box art painter.

The figure consists of only three pieces:

- full body,
- arms with weapon,
- head.

Molded in grey resin, the pieces are cast really well and upon closer inspection I did not find any imperfections in the resin whatsoever. The pieces feature an impressive amount of details, very nicely executed in scale. The fit of the pieces is excellent, and there are no gaps to fill thus ensuring the putty work can be kept to a minimum. The assembly is a breeze.

The label on the figure box states the figure represents Syrian rebel, but the figure could also be used as an armed civilian from almost any modern day conflict. The figure is depicted in an alert posture, ready to use his AK. The anatomy of the figure looks good and the pose is well balanced. The figure wears a polo shirt and jeans, with high-top sneakers on his feet. The details on the clothing look really good, with fine points as a nicely defined shirt collar and placket with two buttons, jeans featuring belt loops, front and back pockets (even small coin pocket), and sneakers with ankle high padded collar. I wish the figure included some kind of additional gear though, a tactical vest or chest rig to hold extra AK magazines.

The head sculpt looks nice with facial features well defined. The slick hairdo, large nose and a chin curtain beard add to the figure character.

Conclusion:

I believe this figure is another winner for Black Army Models. The sculpt was kept pretty simple, but nevertheless very effective, showing a modern day rebel/insurgent/civilian with an AK in his hands. The cast is perfect and the pieces fit really well making the assembly process very easy. Although marketed as a Syrian rebel, this 1/35 scale figure can be used in almost any modern day scenario.

Well done Black Army, I really hope to see more figures in this theme from you guys!

You wonder how did this addiction start? I was a kid when my dad broght home a 1/72 Concord airplane; we built it together as well as couple of other airplanes after that. This phase was just pure fun: glue, paint, decals in no particular order... everything was finished in a day or two. Then I disc...
