Book Review
Sculpting and Body Language
Euro Modelismo 'Sculpting and Body Language' by Mike Blank.

Introduction

Following the current trend of sculpting one's own figures, I asked the sculpting forum for advice on which book or books would show me 'step by step' how some of today's top sculptors create their figures. I had my answer from the forum host, Markus Eckmann, within the hour! I ordered my copy from Historex Agents and needless to say was not disappointed with his recommendation.

The Book

Euro Modelismo 'Sculpting and Body Language' by Mike Blank.
Published by Acción Press
64 Full colour pages
ISBN: 84-95464-42-X

The Depth

The Book consists of 8 sections which take us from a friendly introduction by the Author, through the materials one would need to begin (not a huge amount), an excellent SBS on sculpting a figure to the finished product shown in a rather nice figure gallery at the end of the book.

The sections are divided as follows:

  • Introduction
  • Materials and Tools
  • Body Language, Expressions and Character
  • Ring Mail, Creases and Folds
  • Sculpting a figure
  • Converting and sculpting a 90mm mounted figure
  • Vignettes and Dioramas
  • Figure Gallery

    Photos

With good quality, colour plates throughout this book will be an invaluable reference guide as there are many photos, not only of figure sculpting but also finished, painted figures, vignettes and also some nice studies of re-enactors representing various periods, a refreshing change to the obligatory Waffen SS!

    Negative Points

My only negative comment would be that as a reference book, maybe different binding would be an idea? To keep my book open I need to weigh the pages down or (worse) snap it back on itself which will ultimately lead to a limited life-span, ring-bound would make more sense I think.

    Assessment

Anyone beginning to sculpt their own figures should seriously consider investing in this book. It is written informatively without being condescending and the author doesn't assume that one already knows how to sculpt

  • SUMMARY
Highs: Does what it says on the cover! An excellent SBS guide.
Lows: Unsuitable binding for a reference book.
Verdict: A real must have for anyone starting out or in need of guidance.

    Comments

Matt, in his "lows" for the book, states that the fact it's soft cover you can't keep it open while you sculpt by yourself. Indeed you have got one chance of reproducing pale copies of the stuff presented in the book if you could. But i think the real good thing with these kind of books is that you have to read them, get them under your skin, and THEN starting sculpting on your own! So i don't see this as being a low great review of a great looking book btw thanks for sharing!
