introduction

A 1/16 (110 mm) resin figure from UP Miniaturen. The kit Art.Nr.1102 GFM Fieldmarshal Erwin Rommel 1944 depicts the well known WW2 army commander in his fieldmarshal uniform wearing also a leather coat.
About the figure

There is nothing much to say about Erwin Johannes Eugen Rommel, one of the most known army commanders of the World War II as we all military history interested people heard about him. He is popularly known as Desert Fox, nicknamed while he was the commander of Afrika Korps from the Northern Africa campaign. Upon on this campaign he was respected both by his own soldiers and by the allies not just because of his tactical war skills, but also because of his humane treatment as he was never accused of any war crimes. Soldiers captured during his Africa campaign were reported to have been treated humanely; furthermore, he ignored orders to kill captured commandos, Jewish soldiers and civilians in all theaters of his command. His death was tragic after he was convicted of joining the conspiracy against Adolf Hitler. He was offered to make a choice; he could face the People's Court or choose to commit suicide quietly. The records are mentioning that, while he was going to his death he was dressed as shown at this figure kit.
Box

The figure comes in 130 x 100 x 30 mm.standard UP Miniaturen cardboard box. The front cover shows photo of the painted figure and can serve as a simple painting guide.

Inside the box, there is an A4 paper sheet including painting information and photos of Erwin Rommel which would certainly serve as a guide.

Parts are protected in a zip bag and rest of the box is filled wit polyfoam pieces to avoid the risk of damage.
parts

The figure is sculpted by Ulrich Puchala and made up of 6 resin parts and a metal rod for Rommel's cane. The parts are cast clean and crisp in very good details. There is some little need for clean up and sanding, don't forget it is a resin kit and will need also a bit filling of the seamsbefore priming. However it is one of the cleanest resin kits I've ever met.

  • Legs : He wears tropical trousers (possibly the M1940 model) and officer boots.

  • Head : He wears officers service cap Schirmmütze. The facial details are well sculpted. Yes, he really looks like Rommel. :) The head is casted together with the colar of the leather coat and it dryfits well.

  • Torso : Casted in two pieces. The details of the leather great coat are well sculpted and underneath the uniform of Rommel is visible also with nice details.
    painting

The painter will have no problems regarding painting guides for this figure.
    conclusion

Absolutely an excellent Erwin Rommel figure. I must underline that the parts are well casted and will need minimum preparation before painting.

    Highly Recommended

Then by my father's suggestions I've built some sailing ships in large scales. Later my favorites were 1/35 dioramas, mostly WW2 German till I met the ...
