Introduction

Micro Art Studio from Poland among many other product lines offers figure parts in 30mm scale that can be used for modifying existing figures or help sculptors by providing parts of body and armor.
“Conversion Lab” product line includes also “Amazon Heads” set by Piotr Kupper.

The Kit

Heads are packed in standard MAS blister and protected by black foam from the back. Heads are robust enough to survive the journey protected this way and no head was damaged in any way.
Box contains five Amazon heads attached to one resin block. All heads are depicted in Corinthian-like helmets: two with horse hair crests, two with horse tails, one with metal, sharp crest.
Every head is sculpted individually and there are no two identical heads.

Quality, detailing, expressions

Since the faces are almost totally covered by helmets it is hard to write about their expressions, but faces are presented as calm – not screaming, shouting, smiling nor crying.
As for quality the first thing that is visible in first sight is huge amount of flesh. It sure is thin, but it is almost everywhere – on almost each edge and seam line.
Second negative feature are quite visible seam lines visible on both sides of helmets. Also nasal of middle figure’s helmet seems like there was some error on matrix – it sure will require correction.
Third thing that doesn’t seem correct is helmet’s thickness – I realize that it is difficult to sculpt and before all to cast thin and robust detail.
On the other hand details (after cleaning) are sharp and crisp. They should be quite easy to bring them up during painting. Fact that heads are attached to pouring block by their necks will make block removal much easier and will not require additional detail restoration after removing part from block. Visible facial features are nicely sculpted so are horse hair crests and tails.

Conclusion

This is kit that may be found useful by any wargamer willing to modify his army and add new look to it or by sculptor who would like to avoid sculpting heads.
They also may be used with other MAS products like torsos, legs etc…
A lot of cleaning is necessary which is quite surprising since other resin MAS products presented here required practically no additional work (resin bases).

IMPORTANT:
Base is no longer available from Micro Art Studio but can be purchased from Basicks
SUMMARY
Highs: Interesting subject, visible details, diversity of helmets’ look. Good price.
Lows: Flesh, seam-lines, helmet thickness.
Verdict: Nice and useful but requiring a lot of preparation.

FROM: WOJEWODZTWO PODKARPACKIE, POLAND

My first contact with model making took place over 20 years ago – I’ve made few models of planes when I was 9. They were all destroyed in one disastrous accident. Pain after loosing results of my own work was so big that I’ve left model making for about 15 years ;) . I’ve returned to building models...
