So,,youve got your P-47 kit all ready to go, but you dont like the look of the kit decals.
Time to start scanning the library of AM decals available for the Thunderbolt, but the same old favourites dont really appeal either...

Which P-47 schemes would you like to see available as an AM set?
Which decals are available as AM sets but have incorrect colours etc?

Discuss........

I'd still love for Robert Rankin's Wicked Wacker Weege to be reissued. I'd also like to see Lady Jane of Lt. John Truluck, 63rd FS. Much better representation of Pacific Thunderbolts is needed, such as the 348th FG. I would also like to see markings for Bitter, a P47-N from the 19th FS at Saipan. Of course, I would need to actually finish a build to use any of these markings.

Hi Nige et al. Just saw on Cybermodeler today ( 7 Oct ) that Zotz have released a series of 1/24 decals for the VFS P-47. All nmf finishes and one from the PTO. Have a look. They solve the problem of was it RAF green/grey or two greys! Enjoy. Roger in Oz.

Hi Roger.
Its a good choice of aircraft for a decal set and will hopefully be extremely accurate.
I should know, I did most of the research for it

Everyone look at who the researchers were for this sheet. Read the writing in red towards the middle of the page.

Coincidentally, I was starting a review of the errors in the AM Wolf Pack series.
First one:
Aeromaster 48-784: The Wolf Pack part VIII
The "Dee" is incorrectly represented.

This is from the Decal sheet:

This is from photo on littlefriends.com

The latter photo is a different angle than the decal. That will make them look a different, however the style and outline are different.

Aeromaster 48-786: The Wolf Pack part IX
Robert S. Johnson HV-P "All Hell" is missing the port side lettering ("All Hell").

Lt. Robert S Johnson. Lawton, OK. 61st Fighter Squadron. P-47D 42-76234 HV-P "All Hell". Detail of lettering on right cowl. Photo: Fred Christensen via Sam Sox http://www.littlefriends.co.uk/gallery.php?Group=56&Style=item&origStyle=list&Item=105&Temp=1144&searchString=
There is a photo of a sheet written by Johnson listing his a/c. It confirms that the serial number of the a/c on decal sheet was called "All Hell".
This omission has been around for years. Superscale has at least two sheets with the same omission.

Aeromaster 48-649: The Wolf Pack part 2
The artwork looks more stylized when compared to photos:

Differences in the wings, leather helmet (e.g. stripes and strap length, details) and color. Also white surround is not same as on photos. The use of blue background is the most notable.
It also appears that the artwork changed over time.
Note kill marking is on the artwork as opposed to the right of it.

Is there a white surround on this one?

Nige, I apologize, didn't see that you were involved in the Zotz production. Nice work champ. As I feel the Razorback is the meanest looking P-47 and that VFS plans to release one, VF2408, I'd love to see "Fat Cat" a 509FS 405FG Razorback in 1/24 and 1/32. Eagle Strike made it in 1/48 but seeing as how you appear to have a direct line to P-47 "Heaven" perhaps you can convince Mr. Raphael to make these or the VFS guys to include them in VF2408? Any idea when they may release the 1/24 Razorback?. Cheers. Roger.

I would like to see 61st FS P-47M 44-21187 HV-W "Li'l Snorkey" flown by Lt. Bob Hoeflin, as Bob's daughter and her husband are acquaintances of mine.

Would also like to see 61st FS P-47D 42-75393 HV-S flown by Lt. Col. James Stewart, as his hometown is Corona, California, where I presently live.

Also, 62nd FS P-47D 42-7979 LM-C “Spirit of Bellflower, California”, as Bellflower is where I grew up.

Last but not least P-47D 42-75836, #32 of the 64th FS (Black Scorpions) of the 57th FG, flown by Capt. Paul L. Carll. Paul was a friend of mine, and I was able to attend three P-47 Pilots Association reunions as his guest. Paul was a gentleman in every sense of the word.

So, I am sort of "connected" in one way or the other to the above mentioned four aircraft

I'm a bit of a sucker for nose arts, so I would like to see some of these.

Problem is my references are not vast enough to confirm some of the serials or tail codes

Congrats on the Kudos Nige.

Thanks for the kind comments regarding the Zotz decal sheet.
Its nice to see "Miss Fire" represented correctly.
I believe that some of the P-47s featured will be made available in 1:32 as well.
It was an interesting project to be involved in.

Roger.
The VFS Razorback will happen in due time. Next release will be the P-47M followed by the D-30 release.(2406).
Rest assured if I hear anything from VFS I'll be sure to make an announcement on this site.

Keep the decal responses coming guys.

Russ, Mike Grant did "Wicked Wacker Weegie" as a custom set. I'm sure he'd make a sheet for you if you contacted him. Here's a picture of the finished model on Mike's website:
