Jim Rae takes a look at one of ICM''s recent (and arguably most imaginative) releases - the Henschel 33 D1 Truck in 1/35th scale.

Love it, so many possibilities with this vehicle. And it's not a Big Cat!

I have just finished this model, and very fine it looks too.

However ! The plastic is brittle and some parts extremely fine, especially chassis adornments.

The chassis is built as per the original, bit by bit, so squareness is a prolonged problem - I expect the original vehicle used a jig of some kind.

Many times this kit was in danger of joining the Luftwaffe and flying across the room but I did complete it.

The instructions, pretty clear, do raise some qustions over the order of construction, so trial and error fitting is a must.

I intend building another, as it is a wonderful vehicle, but replacing the finer plastic with suitable metal parts, eg the bumper assembly, running guard brackets and tilt frames.

It's a very interesting review of what looks to be a really nice softskin kit! The subject looks awesome - and I'm a really non-softskin guy!

Hmmm... I don't suppose that there are any documented "flak-trucks" based on this thing, are (were) there? (off topic).

I DO beg to differ (w/ Jim R.), though, regarding the Opel Blitz: I fully agree that the 1/35 world probably does not need another Blitz kit - if we are talking "type S" (4x2 standard truck). The very common "type A (for Allrad)" 4x4 is another thing - many of us would LOVE to see a nice modern kit of that beast! Maybe ICM would take a swing at one, seeing as they clearly do have a handle on doing the soft things well! And, oh yeah, I would get one for a flak conversion in a NY minute!

Can't have too many trucks.

Good review, Jim.

I have to admit that trucks are not my favourite models but it is good to have a choice of truck when the need arises.

Frenchy:

Yeah! I've seen this pic before - and maybe even on some other post by you! (And I seem to recall that there was some debate as to what truck it was...)

And now that you have reminded me of this... I might just have to go get one a these! Just looks so RIGHT with a Flak 38 perched back there!

Can't go wrong with it mounting a Flak 38. Seems they threw one of those on the back of anything with wheels. Wouldnt be surprised if someone dusted off a pic of a Zundapp (sp) mounting one....

NICE REVIEW with some informative comments. I am glad you covered the question of the tires accuracy, and as far as the brittle and fine parts are concearned, ( Thanks for the Heads Up). I would still like to take a shot at building this vehicle. Like many others, I am not a big fan of the softskins but this one looks Cool and has a place in a Dio or two. My References state that this truck was built with both diesel and petrol engines and was used in many roles especially as transport and supply vehicles for motorized infantry. I'll be picking one up soon. Now, where can I find one ???LOL

Finally, a original and good kit we can use

Not Tiger nr. 0347566389567389 or SdKfz 251 ausf. z made by company a, just like b,c,and company d. Just a simple truck...

Lovin it!

This is precisely what ICM do. They are producing an absolutely excellent range of vehicles which although not as 'Sexy' as the big cats are nevertheless what is mostly seen in the Archives.

It's also worth noting that the qualitative leap that ICM have made in the last few years is truly phenomenal.

Oh, and next-up in my ICM Reviews will be the big Merc...
