Wow Dave, this is beauty! Really like the coloring of the church, looks realistic.
Q: Is the piano from PlusModel? Their catalog is quite insane actually. Can't wait to see the rest of the "congregation", but I will.

CHEERS
Dave

Hey Dave, sorry for the late reply... nope. Not from PlusModel. Scratch built by yours truly... some pics of the process back on pages 1 and 2 of this meandering build log. Glad you like it.

Ok, as per my promise to our friend and fellow inspiration specialist, the good sir Jerry R, I have taken steps to clear some space and resume my epic journey into the competition of who can spend the longest period of time between starting and finishing a diorama...

Here is how it stood a couple days ago when I cleared an area in my apartment to work on.

More will come later, I had to relearn how to edit, crop, upload and post photos again as it has been a couple year since my last post... I'm sorry

The good news is I will be posting my progress of the past few days later today after I do some more editing.

Here is a view from the other side, for those of you who may have forgotten, or never seen it before

That is how it stood the last time I did any work on it. Over the next day or two I will update you all with what I have begun to do to correct some errors and fix some issues which had been pointed out by our infamous peanut galleries..

So, stay tuned for more!

Welcome back Dave! You’ve made my day/week/month re-entering DioLand – as you’d remember it a little like Dollywood but with much less silicone. So you started this in um December 2011...so…yep I think you’re in with a very good shot to win the Longevity Cup! I’ll just barge my way back into a front row seat now, newcomers should look midway down page 39 to appreciate the full awesomeness

Thanks Tim, glad I could help! Don't hurt anyone on your way to a front row seat.. The longevity Cup, I like the sound of that. Like a lifetime achievement award. While my initial post was indeed in 2011, I mentioned that at that point I had already spent 4 winters on the build. Not that it matters, it just proves I may be the slowest builder on site, if not the world!

I may also be the pickiest, as can be seen by the number of near complete do-overs I have taken. It's the compulsive obsessive in me probably. Anyway..

thanks for looking in, more to come shortly.

Thanks Jerry, yeah I've been pretty careful not to damage the old girl during my periods of inactivity. I always imagined getting back to work on it, so I have always taken steps to keep it out of harms way.

and speaking of steps..

I've always thought the angular cut-off was a bit too even edged. And the lower section still wasn't making complete sense to me.
so.
I made an adjustment... MY FINAL ADJUSTMENT!!!

and
I'm pretty happy I did, although I'm not sure my next diorama will have much cork brick work..lol

I have done some more work on this last wall section, but haven't uploaded photos to my hitmaker gallery yet. Hopefully later today.

Here are the 3 iterations of the lower section of the tower wall. I personally liked the pillar, as it allowed for an openness of the lower floor, with good sight-lines to all the details under the tower. The second one looked too beefy to me, but I built it well and it seemed to fit, and kept up the theme of the front entrance door. It seemed alright, but somehow not quite...

So I have made the third wall section. It is the last one I will build, and as such I deem it works perfectly!

It does visually block some of the details under the tower, but overall it addresses certain architectural fundamentals that were missed by the first two tries. And more importantly, I think it works well with a bonus of giving me a flat service to prop my bookshelf up against. That had been something I had been struggling with for some time also. so the third times the charm!

thanks Cheyenne, how did you figure it out?

I haven't set them up since they became my new Christmas tree this past December. I like the look of them too much!

Thanks Mark, I'm glad to be back at it too. hoping to be able to keep calm and carry on through to completion this time around. Decided to build out in my dining room area so that I see it everyday and have a reason to finish...

we'll see how it works!

Something I was made aware of needed my immediate attention. No doubt one of the consequences of taking so long to complete a build..

the adhesive backed cork was coming unglued from the wall section.

After peeling some of it back I brushed some glue behind it and clamped it up to dry. I also ripped some sections away to help in the eventual damaging effect I will be creating on the wall, to matchup more with the other side of the tower.

Aha I stand corrected, 13 years on so in fact you’re going for ACTUAL weathering rather than painted, a cunning ploy. Renovations all looking good - much better than the original builder’s shoddiness eh?! Light ‘er up

The last guy was a Bozo I think, always clowning around I think! Talked a big talk, but had no game...

The lighting is planned for the foyer area, since the newest, last wall section will close that area to a large amount of natural light, making the details in it hard to see.

Did some more corking last night, will post a few shots tonight hopefully.

Gonna spend a few minutes out on my 5th floor apartment's balcony... I know it's not a " 9th floor terrace", but it'll do in a pinch

Good luck on your impending move Tim, and thanks for stopping by.

Thanks Brian, I just dusted off the piano the other day and gave it a fresh coat of varnish to bring back it's lustre. Sitting around collecting dust had dulled the look of it. Will eventually have to shoot some matts and gloss varnishes over all their corresponding surfaces... dust is a natural detail killer

Jerry, I used to think about having to dismantle old dioramas to make space for new stuff... well, back when I used to think I would build more than just one!

I still can't believe that you and Stick, and probably many others actually demolish and/or junk dio's..

I fully understand the space constraints, especially
with the prodigious amount of work you guys do... but it makes me a little sad thinking about throwing away treasures like that.

C'est la vie I guess. Life can be full of difficult choices... my next one is going to be hard to make, do I have a couple scoops of chocolate peanut butter cup ice cream, or a couple triscuits with some old cheddar cheese?

Any thoughts?

Work has continued, at a slower pace since I have returned to full-time work this week. 3 of us are getting the course ready to open, as our provincial government has given golf courses the go ahead to open under new guidelines. I'm feeling a lot of muscles I haven't used for some time crying out in anger, but I will push through the aches and pains of being almost 57 and off work for the past 6 weeks!

Here is the update for tonight:

Grain of wheat lights like those in the tower, and the streetlamp. My plan is for 4 or 5 of them to hang in some kind of a chandelier from the ceiling of the foyer under the tower. their power source will be in the ceiling with some kind of a switchable battery bank hidden from sight by the wooden structure of the bell tower. It already has a hidden 9 volt battery compartment that supplies the stairwell lights.

Lots of fun! Lights, camera, action!
