Okay, as promised, I am now going to start this build log.
I will try to take you through each step of the build as I go.
I will try to build something similar to this vehicle...

...also using the same green & black camouflage pattern.

As with my previous SAS Pink Panther Land Rover build I will be leaning heavily on this book for my references...

The kit I will be using is the Tamiya SAS Land Rover Pink Panther (kit #76)...

...along with the following aftermarket products to help enhance the finished piece...

Legend #LF1262 Pink Panther Update/Stowage Set

Eduard #35754 Land Rover SAS for Tamiya Kit Photo-Etch set.

Minor Models #VMD35022 Workable Leaf Springs for LWB Land Rover series.

Okay, the wheels were a major headache as there are none on the market which are correct for this particular vehicle.
I couldn't use the Hussar sand tyres as the finished vehicle will not be modelled in the desert.
So, I had to come up with a solution!
I solved the problem by using the Mouse House resin Land Rover wheels, cutting the non-directional bar tread tyres off, leaving the correct 9.00x16 5 bolt Land Rover wheel rims.
Next, I took the plastic tyres from this kit...

...and kit bashed them onto the waiting wheel rims et voila!
Correct size wheels & tyres!!!

I also used pieces of 0.3mm brass wire to add the air valves.

So now I can get on with the build.
Back soon...

Joe.

Sorry for the long delay but the trouble with modelling is that life just gets in the way!

Okay, this is where I'm at so far:

I had to cut off the pins located on the chassis that take the kit axles as they are not needed when using the workable suspension from Minor.

The PE here is for the spare wheel as the plastic Tamiya part is incorrect. I added some of the Archer resin rivets to replace the ones sanded off whilst readying the part for the PE.

Now for those workable leaf springs...

Okay, so now I've finished the Minor workable leaf springs.
Bloody fiddly, but worth the effort!

There were issues with the fit of the forward drive shaft as it was too short so I replaced it with a piece of brass rod & a little copper wire wrapped around it in places for some extra detailing.

Completed front bumper with added 'D' shackles from MR Modellbau.

Completed rear bumper.
Notice also that the exhaust pipe outlet has been drilled out so as to make a definite hole.

The following pictures are some mock ups with the wheels temporarily fitted...

That concludes the chassis build.
Now on to the body...

Stage 1 of cab:

The seats from the kit have been reworked. The jerry can holders have been removed, as have the seat cushions ready to take the seats from the Legend update set.
The black dots are some added resin rivet heads from Archer.

Reworked kit part ready to take the radiator & grill from the Eduard set.

Stage 2 of cab:

Now I've added all gear levers & handbrake. I waited until I was ready to fit the front part of the body before I added the gear sticks as they have a tendency to break off. Well, they do with me, anyway!

Next the front body segment:

I have used a mixture of the Eduard PE parts & the Legend PE/Resin parts to update this area.
Both the Eduard & Legend efforts are not completely accurate on their own but used together you can make an entirely accurate model!

Again, the black dots are Archer resin rivet heads which have been extensively added around this part of the model.

Here I've used the Eduard PE front grill & radiator as it is the better option, in my opinion. There is a lot more detail in it as opposed to the Legend offering.

Brass PE on the bonnet is from the Legend PE & adds some nice detail to the front of the vehicle. This piece is not available with the Eduard PE.
The rifle holders above both wheel arches are parts from the Legend update set. Both parts are extremely well detailed & are pretty much good to go. Just watch the fitting as there are some very small issues here.
The rifle holder on the left (passenger) side has had the rifle butt removed & an opening drilled into the "canvas" to show that it is empty as the commanders rifle will be modelled into the crew cab interior on the finished piece.

This photo shows extensive use of the Archer rivets.

Difficult to pick up from this photo but if you look under the dash/glove compartments you will see a brass tube at either end. These pieces are on the original but I haven't a clue what they are for.
Also difficult to see here is a couple of holes drilled into the passenger glove compartment on the outer edge.

Next step is to fit this segment to the chassis...

Cab stage 3:
You will have to watch the fit here as it is not good at all!
Sanding & filling is extensively required between front segment & the cab floor which comes ready moulded on the chassis part of the kit.

Seats have also been added at this stage.

Now to the back section:

The above part has to be extensively reworked.
Lines have to be scribed to show the top cover of the rear fuel tanks as separate parts. These appear to be sheets of ply that sit atop the fuel tanks.
The notch has to be filled that takes the kit seat if you are using the Legend update.
The locating holes for the fire extinguisher have to be filled also & then a circular indentation needs to be made near the outside front edges of the "ply board" covers as shown. I'm not sure what these are for. Perhaps they are breather holes for the fuel tanks but they are on the original so must be on the model.

Okay, rear section complete:

Again, keep your eye out for fitting problems. Nothing that a little filler & a piece of sand paper wont sort out!

These pieces of PE shown along the side panels in the above photos are a real pain in the Harris! But look nice when done.

I added a couple of pieces of 0.4mm plastic rod here for the hinges to the ply board over the fuel tanks.

Fuel cans from the Legend set were used here along with the brass racks.
Accurate Armour GPMG 7.62mm belt ammo cans were added & some 0.13mm plasticard for the ammo trays that they're sitting in.
If you look closely you can see that I turned the search light holder on the starboard side through 45 degrees using the heat from a hair dryer. This will add a little interest to the finished model.

You'll notice that I haven't added the rear seat at this stage. This is so I can gain easier access to the front crew cab to fit the radio equipment once the rear section is in place.

Just a quick update here.
I had to go back & rework the kits shock absorbers.
When I test fitted the rear section onto the chassis I found that the shock absorbers got in the way & rendered the workable suspension inoperable as I glued the shock absorbers to the chassis without thinking about it & suddenly realised that the workable suspension wouldn't work! DOH!!!
Therefore, I removed the shock absorbers, cut them, drilled a hole into the shock housing & added a piece of 1mm brass rod, replacing the "moving" part of the plastic piece. Then I re-glued the top of the shock back onto the chassis & now the suspension is working again!
Result!!

Okay, so major update. I went ahead & completed the build.
After fixing the rear section I added the shelf with large canvas equipment stowage bag at the very back.
You will need to remove some of the raised detail on the plastic tailgate piece of the kit to obtain a snug fit for the resin equipment shelf.

The equipment shelf shown above is from the Legend set but I didn't want to model it the same as the Pink Panther I previously built so I cut off the top bergan which comes moulded onto the piece & added a couple of bergans from the new Black Dog Falklands war figure sets. Then I filled in any gaps using a two part putty.

The chain used here is finer than the one supplied with the Legend set.
"Shoulder straps" were added to the bergans cut from thin lead sheet & 'tied' onto the rail once the brass rail was fixed into place.

The number plate used here is from the Eduard PE.

The radio placed near the rear seat is an Accurate Armour Clansman 353 I had made for me. My thanks to Derek of Accurate Armour for supplying this piece.
Trays were fashioned with 0.13mm plasticard for the 7.62mm belt ammo cans in the back.

The trays for the front mounted radio equipment were fashioned from 0.13mm plasticard & some Archer rivets. The TUAAM box is from Accurate Armour.
The Theodolite was made up & repositioned onto the bonnet as per the photos from my reference material.
The PE scrim nets used on the model are from Accurate Armour. They were annealed using a low powered blow torch to soften them & bent into the desired shape.
The smoke grenade dischargers at the front & rear corners of the vehicle are a mixture of both Legend & Eduard parts.

This shot shows the empty bracket where the Larkspur radio should be located between the front seats. As I understand it the Larkspurs were replaced with the later Clansman radio sets which are located adjacent to the rear seat. The empty radio bracket between the front seats is from the Eduard PE.

Front mounted GPMG. I've used the Live Resin weapon here with Accurate Armour ammo can, Legend bipod & other parts. The sling was taken from a Royal Model US Infantry weapons set & extended with some strips made out of lead sheet.
I used some 0.8mm plastic rod to attach the gun onto its mounting bracket as, for some strange reason, they are missing from the otherwise excellent Legend part.

Opposite view.

Rear mounted GPMG from Accurate Armour with Live Resin bipod.
The stanchion from the Tamiya kit has to be shortened when using the Legend ammo holder which is okay as it is too tall, anyway.

Opposite view.

All searchlights are taken from the Legend set. I first drilled out the face so I can fit an AK 5mm white light lens after painting.
0.2mm copper wire was used to wrap around the circumference of each light. This is used to model the electric cable as seen in the reference material.
I then mounted each light onto some copper wire for ease of handling whilst painting.

Now a few photos of the overall finished model:

The model has been washed thoroughly by first spraying it with my 'secret' formula of blue screen wash mixed with household ammonia at a ratio of 4:1 & then showered off using tepid water & will now be left to dry overnight ready for a primer coat in the morning.

I hope you like the build so far.
Any comments or suggestions would be most welcome.

Great work Joe,

and nice to see how much attention you put in the Details.
The bergans from BD looks great and are perfect for such a Model. Can´t wait to see the Figures to man the vehicle this time.

Happy modeling

Joe, pay attention to the Green's, that can be a cause for problems and look closely at the Tan, Brown and how the Black (last color) is striped (applied)...

Nice work Sir...

I managed to get the model primed today using Vallejo grey primer.
I've also managed to get hold of a photo booth, as you can see. Excellent stuff!
Here are some photos...

I'm going to do a little filling in around the wheel rims in the morning as I'm not too happy with how they've turned out.

Hi Joe,

have a look at this SBS on painting DPM Camo:

Painting British & Pakistani Camouflage

Your next SBS Photos Looks awsome too. The PE stuff is great but i hate it sometimes because the parts are so tiny sometimes,

Firstly, thank you very much, Stefan, for providing that very helpful link on how to paint British DPM.
I will definitely be referring to that when I get to the figure painting stage.
Okay, the next step was to lay down the main colour of the vehicle which was this colour...

Then I added a little of this colour...

...to the main colour & sprayed all horizontal surfaces & repeating this step by adding more Sky Grey to the mix, slowly building up some highlights.
These are the results so far...

Next step:cammo!

Thanks for your thoughts fellas!

I used Tamiya XF69 NATO Black for the camouflage paint & sprayed the cammo pattern freehand with an Iwata Custom Micron CM-C Plus airbrush on a very low pressure setting:

The next step is to paint all onboard weapons & equipment.
