It should better be nicknamed "probe" since it resembels the Imperial recon probe on Hoth as seen in Episode V The Empire Strikes Back.

I think its nicknamed 'droid' is because it rides on the back like the X-wings.

I think it got the name "droid" because it bears more than a passing resemblance to the Imperial Probe Droid of The Empire Strikes Back. It has a somewhat domed head and the protruding eyes seen briefly in that movie on Hoth.
