I have some doubts whether the hand gestures are the ones that Arabs would use... Arabs have quite different "gesture system" from what we are used to in the Western world. It could be that those gestures are either meaningless for Arabs, or have a completely different meaning for them than we think.

You're basically right, Pawel.. an Arab would not give the middle finger that way.. so, from a rivet counting stand point, this figure is not accurate for an Arab person But, generally speaking, I think the meaning of the middle finger will be understood whichever way it's given... Not sure about other cultures, though

I agree middle finger gesture has different variations on Mideast and even some European cultures but I believe lately it is popular as V-sign and widely used in every part of world. Besides, I think these tankers are probably taking this photo not for family albums but to publish on internet, facebook, twitter or any social media to show they are protesting something...so IMHO it would be better for them to show their reaction in the most common way instead of a local gesture that more people can understand. This link is a quick google search example.
