I was at Hobby Lobby today and saw a Monogram Pzkfw IV. I thought it might be a fun build. It has been 40 years sence I last built a Monogram tank. Wow, it was the same price as Tamiya's Easy Eight Sherman. I was thinking it was in the 20's, not $50. I ended up leaving it on the shelf. I have noticed that kit prices have moved up. Some of the Dragon kits are at the $80 mark and others like Tiger Models are more. Ugh.

Yes, that makes sence. The $49.95 at Hobby Lobby was a surprise to me. Thanks.

On their site you can download a 40% off coupon every day of the week. They emailed me a 50% off coupon valid for the three days before Christmas, but I couldn't use it. If you get on their mailing list the 50% off pops up pretty regularly.

Last month when Hobby Lobby was having their 40% off sale I started comparing the prices between them and other retailers and Hobby Lobby had much higher prices on most of their items. Even adding the 40% discount the prices were still higher than Amazon, ScaleHobbyist, Squadron, Sprue Brothers and several other vendors I shop at. There is a Hobby Lobby about an hours drive from me and I've gone in there many times but never buy anything. They have a poor selection and I can get better prices on line even with over night shipping.

Hobby Lobby doesn't always make sense in pricing of Model items-- I think its a typical retail store that carries a lot of products, usually top-down driven. The folks doing the pricing are not model builders either--I was there just yesterday and talked with a young lady who told me she was the department manager. I asked if she built the models, and she said no, she just keeps it stocked, but really didn't know anything about them! I've picked up some items though at super prices. Don't forget to use their %40 coupon-- that brings a $50 model down to about $35 or so give or take taxes.

Yeah that's a pricing error. Their monogram armor is in the 20 range. Meanwhile, the hobby lobby in kcarea have the Gamma Goat, the Tamiya M4a3e8 and, in 48 scale, the Tamiaya M1a2 and HobbyBoss Sherman. Otherwise, hobbylobby, is always spotty with what the order for armor, buuuuttttt they always have a very good selection of model paints and model supplies.

yep, if you bookmark hobby lobby to your phone, just visit while in line, and when it pulls up you see at very top of page 40% off one item, click, let it load and the clerk will take coupon code off off it. You can use it everyday.

I remember thinking it would be about $15 after using the 40% off when I was in there a few weeks ago. I think they put the wrong price tag on this one.

Hobby Lobby I use for supplies, especially paint and glue. No shipping delays and right around the corner. Matter of fact, I need a glue applicator and may run down there, today.

Me too.
I really do not want to waste my modeling time building 40-50 years old kits. But they are getting a few newer Tamiya releases and hopefully that will continue.

A few days before Christmas I stopped at one of the LHS's near my house to buy some drill bits. RC and trains are this shops speciality not plastic, but they do have a great supply of paints and tools. While looking through their kit selection I noticed a Meng USMC M-1 for $ 89.95 which is $15.00 more than MSRP. At first I thought it was a pricing error then I saw a couple Tamiya !/32 plane kits also above suggested retail price. Did they jack up the prices because of the holidays ? I don't know, but I thought it was interesting they did.

Always funny to read this kind of posts. How many hours do you have to work to earn enough to buy a kit? Sorry guys, but most of you have no idea what shock is...

From 2 hours and upward to maybe 10 hours for the expensive ones, resin kits require more work (to buy and to build).
I do not shop in any LHS since that would increase the cost too much. I have the worlds most well assorted hobby shops right here at my desk. The postal delivery point is about 5 minutes walk from my home.

Paul,

Great comment. Out of curiosity, do you have a LHS and do the prices match up to the prices we complain about?

Yes and yes, there are a couple of LHSs within my reach and the prices are essentially the same, but it's not only about the prices:

For me to buy 1 Tamiya model is usually 3 to 4 hours work. For Dragon/Bronco/Meng etc it'd be a full day's work or even more. Being working poor means I usually only buy more than one model maximum twice a year now.
