Funny, I've built two of that kit and got nothing like that.

Hi Steve, yea I was surprised too. I certainly don't remember this on the last one I built, but that was the mid-1970s. I built their recent re-pop of the Renwal Atomic Cannon with no real issues. But it's all sorted now so I don't mind!

I've had very little progress. I'm very dissatisfied with this kit. I've got a little V-notch in the barrel end. It doesn't show up much in this photo.

I think I'll add a tiny piece of stretched sprue, putty, and sand. Maybe it'll be less noticeable. I'm only going to use the driver figure at most. I'm not going to try to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear.

Sounds like a plan Don. I hope it works out. The old days of split barrels, curved like a banana really shows why turned aluminium became the after market of choice.

Got some more work done on my Monogram "Screamin' Mimi" kit. I pretty much have the basic construction finished and just have a few more pieces to add and a few more gaps to fill and sand and then I should be ready to apply the base coat of paint.







There seems to be a theme here with the old Monogram kits......gaps. I have some pretty good ones to deal with where the upper and lower hull pieces go together.....or are supposed to go together. Thank goodness for putty.

Principal building is done. The only things added are a mantlet cover and some brass wire handles. Next up are some cam nets and then on to painting.

Though those Shermans look like more than a handful.

My M48 is coming along - I've got most of the plastic built. I've tried to resist fixing/replacing too many of the ancient details since they are part of the charm of this otherwise obsolete kit! I had to modify the turret mount so I could lock it in place after painting - it has a peg and cap that would mean fixing the turret to the hulltop before finishing hull assembly. And the white tube acts as an access tunnel to holes in the floor where a wire twist-tie will secure the tank to the diorama. (I'd use a bolt up from the base, but with a solid deck there is no way to get in to tighten the nut...)




On the turret I had to replace the side rails with plastic rod, and the handles on the gas cans were just too offensive! I'll add the canvas mantlet and duffel bags to the rack later. And somewhere I think I have some Verlinden ammo cans that'll be the right vintage.




The axles will have to wait until I build the base, as I want to pose them on uneven ground just like Shep recommended...

I have always wanted to try that too Tom after seeing his dio with the M48 going over the uneven ground. I always thought it looked really cool. I thought, wow, that's a cool and simple idea.

I got a little more work done on my "Screamin' Mimi" this weekend. Not much though other than I got the gaps filled in and sanded and the bolt pieces for the three piece transmission cover glued in place.





I hope to get a base coat painted on it in a few days once everything has dried good.

Randy, beautiful work on that old kit. Sure it will look good under a layer of paint.

I have finished construction. There is still some work to do on the rocket launcher and some sanding and detail addition.

I'm finally getting a start on this, at least the box is opened. Lots of dust. I'm surprised the tires are still in one piece.

Time to start! Lots of holes and gaps to fill here as per the norm for these old kits. I'm gonna sand and re-texture the cast finish to even everything out.





I've taken a look at the figures who are all wearing helmets. No helmets worn in the picture but helmets are laying around. In other words this lot will get decapitated and the heads drilled out to create empty helmets. It's tough serving in the US Army in the 1970's!

A search through all my old figures has failed to find a single bare head! Looks like I will have to take a half-head from a figure and sculpt the hair. That'll be something new for me! Probably use some Milliput (and a bunch of patience).

Cam nets are on and drying. Next up will be adding the stowage then paint.

I join this party a little late. Here is my tribute to SP. It’s not SP's 1:32 Monogram kit, but the venerable Tamiya offering of 1974 - as old as me to the year!. Just hope it doesn’t take me 46 years to finish it!

I have been dead in the water these past 2 weeks. An influenza knocked me out cold (no Corona, liquid or otherwise, was involved). I am on the mend now, so I hope to be sitting at the bench again soon.

Well I got my base coat of OD Green applied to my Monogram "Screamin' Mimi".



Once it dried I was able to see all the seams that I missed when I was filling and sanding. So, time to get out the white Squadron putty again. I also managed to break off the antenna I was so proud of when I made it. I knew I shouldn't have added it until the end of the project. Oh well, nothing like stretching out more sprue to make another one. So I hope to get the seams I missed filled and sanded and another coat of paint applied this coming weekend.

I will be entering with Tamiya's venerable Universal Carrier. This kit was released in 1976. The version I have looks like it is from the original release run.

Black Primer coat on. Now on to the fun stuff.
