AMPSEAST show report

  • move
The weekend of September 24th and 25th was a milestone in the history of AMPSEAST, as they hosted their first two day show in Danbury, Connecticut.
Being just a short 90 minute drive from my house, I unfortunately got a later start on Friday morning than I originally wanted to, and arrived about noon. Since I couldn’t check in yet, and after paying my admission, I joined up with a few others to do my first round of judging with three other AMPS members. After finishing this secession, it was time to check in, so off I went, then returned to do my bit as ACJ. Of course I managed to squeeze in a little vendor time in-between these gigs. After finishing up my turn as ACJ, it was off to take some photos.
This year I got a little smarter, and actually put a little mark on each model I photographed, so I didn’t waste time, and confusion as to what I already photographed and what I didn’t. If you’ve never been to an AMPS show, they do things a little different than the typical IPMS shows, as all models are actually judged before they hit the display tables. (And here is where I insert my all important plug about the importance for volunteering for judging at AMPS shows. The more judging teams there are, the faster the display tables get filled.) I’m happy to say that all the models entered on Friday were actually judged on Friday, so I managed to get those all photographed. Another trip through the vendor room, and it was a wrap for the day for me. I was off to my room to rest a little before meeting Mike DelVecchio at the hotel bar. After a light supper, and a little fellowship with other modelers at the bar, it was time for this old man to head to bed. (Thanks again for dinner Mike!)

About Dave O'Meara (Grumpyoldman)
FROM: FLORIDA, UNITED STATES

I'm rewriting this in a much more humoristic way, to help over inflate my ego, and place my self on a pedestal, because I don't have a life, and plastic models are the only thing I live for. I plead guilty as charged to excessive babble, light hearted humor, and continued encouragement to youngsters...

Excellent report Dave! I really appreciate the detail on how the show was running and the importance of the volunteer judges. Our AMPS chapter, Central SC, is planning our first show (a one day event) for July, 2011, so we're hungry for all the info we can get. This report will go into our file of AMPS show links for reference. Thanks again for taking the time to tell us all about the AMPS East show! Mike

Mike, Send me a PM with any questions you have about the contest. I've got a neat little MS excel file set up to handle the results tallying. Any other help I can give, I'll be happy to share. Regards, Georg Eyerman Chief Judge, IPMS/AMPS East
