MRAP, All-Terrain Vehicle

  • move
These pictures were taken in March 2011 of an M-ATV (MRAP, All-Terrain Vehicle) in use in Afghanistan with the US Army Corps of Engineers. Since we now have two kits of this beautiful vehicle (finally), some reference pictures are in order! It seems to me that exterior pictures of this vehicle are pretty easy to come by on the internet, so I concentrated on the interior. Here are some of the highlights:

Driver’s Seat: Dash and gauges are pretty standard. The tire inflation system is to the left of the steering wheel, the transmission selector and air brakes to the right. On the roof above the driver’s head is the driver’s intercom (with attached headset), DVE display screen and the “Check Six” back-up camera controls. In the center of the windshield is the master control for the intercom (dark green), a sensor for the fire extinguisher (white) and engine fire extinguisher control box (red). At the driver’s right knee are the fire extinguisher for the tires and fuel tank, and the joystick for the DVE camera.

Truck Commander (TC) seat: Between the Driver’s and TC’s seat is a large rack that has the remote for the Duke jammer, radio mounts, ammo storage (in this case, 7.62 for the M240B), circuit breakers, and the BFT computer. The TC’s seat, like all four seats, has a five-point seatbelt. On the TC’s dash is the DAGR and BFT screen. On the top right of the windshield is his intercom control. At his left foot is the keyboard for the BFT, at his right the Rhino control. (The Rhino isn’t fitted to this particular vehicle)

The right rear seat (behind the TC) has the controls for the rear heat/AC. The left rear has the main control for the Duke. Next to each seat is a fire extinguisher. The back wall has three intercoms, fire suppression system, and another sensor for the fire extinguisher. The gunner either stands on the platform between the two seats, or sits in the sling seat. The mount in the turret is the Mk93 mount, configured here for the M240B.

At the rear of this particular vehicle is a winch for lowering and raising the spare tire. (Not all MATVs have it). The spare weighs about 350 lbs, so the winch would make a HUGE difference in changing the tire. The ACU rucksack on the back is a Warrior Aid and Litter Kit (WALK). The storage boxes contain tools and equipment for recovery and towing.

I've been modelling almost all of my life. When I was about 12, I got Tamiya's M4 Sherman for Christmas. It became my masterpiece, since I used all the parts. The kit came with one of those color Tamiya brochures, with cool pictures of other kits in the military minatures line, and I was hooked. ...
