BTR-70 in Afghanistan

  • move
George Bacon shares with us some images of his BTR-70. This is the Zvezda 1/35th scale offering and I think George has done a very good job with it. As mentioned this is the Zvezda offering of the BTR-70, but in addition to the base kit George has added MV Lenses for the head lights and an Armorscale aerial mount. Eduard also extracted some money from George for one of their photo etched sets and was finished off with some scratch built work to replicate areas such as the hatch and door hinges. I am sure you will agree George has shown a lot of skill here and he has also done a high quality job of the finish.

Really great work! I specially like the way the colors blend together. May I ask what colors have been used here? Thanks! Cristian

Thanks Cristian! I used Model Master acrylic paints for a base. One color is British Gulf Armor Light mixed with a little Black and White; the other color is Gull Gray. Highlights are brought-out with a wash of black artist's oil paint, diluted with mineral spirits, and dry-brushing with a lightened mix of Testors' enamels (a mixed very-light tan). The dust coat is Model Master Armor Sand enamel, applied as a filter. The final layer is Testors' Dull Coat.

It looks very nice. The paint job is superb. And the grilles over the vents at the rear are a nice touch. I finished the very same kit, also in Afghanistan, for the 8 wheels are better campaign... Yours has a bit more finesse to it than mine though.

Nice job

Very nice job!! Just change the wheels!!! Seriously! The plastic, Zvezda is using tends to react with the vinyl from the tires: I have two in my showcase, both, had thiw reaction after a year or so, and had to change the wheels with resin ones...

Thanks Northern_Lad and voryah!

Orpant, I never saw anything like that before! Resin wheels (and tires) would be a plus, since I found the Zvezda tires a little deformed (i.e. they do not sit flat on the ground).

Stunning work. One of the nicest builds I've seen on here recently. - Steve
