Verdun 1916

  • move
This year is the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Verdun. Phuong made a small diorama to show his idea of what life in the trenches looked like. His goal was to depict a scene that showed an activity that took place regularly and that showed the horrors of war even when not fighting the opposing forces. In this small diorama, Phuong wanted to show a scene of daily living. Gloomy horror and humour together with a German soldier as he does a spot of rat catching in a captured French trench.

Stunning depiction of the horrific atmosphere & how life is reduced to merely surviving. This could also work in a post-apocalypse scenario with the remnants of humanity hunting rats for dinner.

Very well executed. To me, it has an eerie sense about it that adds to the overall impression of his diorama. The various degrees of wet earth/dirt/mud are also very effective.
