M10 in Aachen

Piter is a modeler from Poland recently registered on Armorama. In Autumn 2017 he decided to get back to his beloved hobby - plastic scale modeling. His first model was Tamiya's 35350 M10 Wolverine built OOB, no photo etched parts or other aftermarket bits, and mounted on a simple diorama with figures from Tamiya's 35347 and animals from Tamiya 35128. Piotr painted the model using Tamiya acrylics. The diorama base was made with the use of Polak static grass, the fence and wooden logs are made from natural wood. Piotr has already changed the diorama a few times, adding the little puppy and removing the German Shepherd dog. The fragment of the wooden fence was also finally removed in order to make the outdoor photos better and more realistic. The majority of pictures depict the tank destroyer's initial paint cover, but he evantually decided to cover the whole vehicle with semi gloss transparent lacquer which resulted in a darker shade of the paints. Piotr chose Tamiya's weathering master sets and panel liners, as well as water based paints to create the weathering effects. This project took Piotr 3 months to complete.

He has also made some photo presentation videos available on YouTube:

Hey Piotr, nice build. I like the pig, though I am afraid that I'm missing the point on the crew in the yellow bio-hazard suits. Still, nicely done, though I would have continued the mud splatter from the front glacis to the gun mantel and turret sides.

Piotr, Nice diorama. I like the co position and the scene. Your method of replicating the M10 paint is creative. The grass and mud look great! I think you can modify the khaki of the tanker jumpsuit and tanker jackets to make them more tan. Perhaps a wash of olive or light brown? I look forward to your next model!

Thank You very much for the comment. When it comes to the uniforms' colour I was trying to follow the TAMIYA's front boxart I am afraid of applying any washes now.

Hi Piotr, Looking at the box art I can understand why you used the color you did. The khaki does appear to be on the yellow side. Box art can be deceiving. I don't know who Tamiya's box artist was in the 1970s but some of their artwork was beautiful. The artist seems to have been influenced by impressionism and the Flemish landscape painters of the 1600-1700s. Tamiya's first Tiger I box is still one of my favorites. Look at it and you will see that the tank is painted in medium shadow and bright light, colors being predominately a deep blue-green. On the sunny surfaces the panzer yellow is more of a light olive hue, and the greens are a muted Hooker Green. What makes it interesting are the violets and oranges used in the tracks and road wheels, plus the lime and grass greens used to demarcate the rubber rims of the road wheels. Personally, I'd love to have a large copy of this art on my wall! None of that really matters except to demonstrate how box art is not always a good guide for painting and yet sometimes, it is the only guide a modeler has. Sometimes the box art is painted with more of an artistic eye-catching style than to be a color guide. So be proud of your model. BTW, what Tamiya color did you use on the figures?

the colour was flat yellow matt xf3. But I always try to mix colours to there surely were 2 or three drops of some other tones.

By the way, I love TAMIYA boxart. I think they are the best. Second best boxart are the ones created by Ron Volstadt for DRAGON - completely different style, but beautiful. To be honest I try not to stick to the actual colours, but rather follow boxart - which of course may be misleading.

I concur. Volstadt's artwork is much like the style I attempted back when I tried to be an artist. He and Keith Ferris are the ones I hoped to emulate. Never got anywhere near their level of incredible.

The modelling looks good. Only comment I have beyond the uniform colour is that it all looks rather verdant for the time the Allies reached Aachen, which was in October. I’d be more convinced if the title set it in Normandie, particularly with the terrain in the background photo. Aachen was a city too, so I’d expect it to look a bit more urban😉
