RFM M1A2 Abrams.

Based on pictures of a repainted Bradley AFV that he had seen, János built and painted this RFM M1A2 Abrams to represent a vehicle during Reforger exercises. He wanted to produce a tank that was repainted with a winter camo, well worn to the base paint. To this was added a muddy, snowy, slushy base, which accentuates the tank's worn look. János started construction in October 2018 at an exhibition as a showcase and describes it as a very meticulous, multi-piece model. The interior and the engine are both beautiful, unfortunately, not much is seen. It was a pleasure to build, but the assembly of the tracks was a little frustrating. One link is made up of 6 pieces, 78 on each side. It can be built without glue and moves but he ended up gluinng it in place because it collapsed several times. He says it's one of the best models he's ever worked with and would strongly recommend to anyone who is interested in the Abrams.

About Skultéti János (Skulijani)
FROM: PEST, HUNGARY

I've been building models since 1994. Mostly combat vehicles in size 1/35, sometimes 1/48 size fighters. After a few years of pause, I resumed this wonderful hobby.

It looks pretty good. The biggest issue is the historical accuracy aspect in the name and coloring though. First, the last REFORGER exercise was held in 1993. The M1A2 wasn't fielded until after that; about '95. Also, no straight M1A2s were painted in overall green. All M1A2s, with the exception of a few at the Armor schoolhouse, were painted sand.

Dear Gino! Thank you for your comment, indeed. The image on the link also has such a tank. Specifically, this image was the basis, though it was made on the Allied Spirit in 2018. I got involved in the names. But a good subject because almost only yellow Abrams can be seen everywhere. The historical correspondence (formed, signs) was not really important here, but rather the interestingness of appearance. There are differences between the image and the model, such as the machine gun at the top of the tower or the painting. Looking at many of the painted pictures, I saw that the solutions actually differ from one formation to another. LINK LINK LINK

The tanks in the Allied Spirit 2018 photos are actually M1A2 SEP V2 Abrams, which are very different tanks. They are also a sand tanks that has been over-sprayed with temporary green/white water-based paint for the environment. M1A2 SEP V2 tanks come in both sand and 3-color NATO camo. You can call it what you like since it is your model. My only point is that it is not historically accurate as a REFORGER tank.

My only point is that if the tank's hull is that dirty then the sides of the turret should also be that dirty. Tanks wear what they drive through and it's spread fairly uniformly over the whole vehicle. Clumps of flying mud thunking down on the roof are completely normal and following another tank pulling roosters of mud a cause for concern in the following tank. In those cases even the crew in their turret hatches are subject to a good smearing of whatever they're currently driving through. So, the top and sides of your otherwise dirty tank are too clean -and green.

In interior photo #1, isn't the loader's seat post meant to fit into that piece slightly above and right of it? That's the step down into the turret. Great build!!

I'm not much on modern armor but I am lots on good models - János, great work! Now I want to build a "Jedi Knight" (are Abrams still called that?)! That mud and melting snow look chilling.

Dear Frederick, Thank you very much, glad you like it. I'm not very at home on the M1, they are smarter than me here. The Jedi Knight you build will surely be very beautiful. I wish you much joy and success in building. Cheers:          John.
