Sturmhaubitze 42 Ausf G in Kurland, 1945

  • move
CV-19 has allowed Dan to finish some projects, including this Sturmhaubitze 42 going to the front in Kurland, 1945. The diorama also depicts sombre Luftwaffe Field troops returning from the combat with one soldier is being assisted due to his wounds. The crew member of the assault gun is holding a medical kit to offer assistance. The Kurland pocket was a desperate fight for the Germans and they held out until the end of the war.

The assault gun is from a Dragon kit and the crewmembers are from MIniArt. The Luftwaffe soldiers are from Dragon. Notice that the wrecked Soviet jeep has severed its fuel line upon the crash from the broken towed mortar. The fuel has spilled onto the ground. Dan used an old Tamiya kit for the jeep and an old Zvedza kit for the towed mortar.

Like to build 35 scale ,mostly WW2. Modelling is a welcome relief from the stress of daily work.

I love anything Kurland related, this included. This is very well done. The equipment and uniforms are perfect for the setting, as well as the ground work. It definitely feels like Kurland. Great job.

Very good. Realistic and not too busy.

It's a really fine bit of modeling, but there are two things that need correcting: a great deal of shine off the uniforms that would be consistent with rain, but not what the diorama purports to show. The other thing is the tracks sit above the dirt road which is not realistic: the StuH 42 is heavy and the tracks would "bite" down into the earth. Otherwise it's excellent modeling that shows what defeat looks like.

The figures are from a Dragon set and I applied Testors dull coat and some raw umber wash. Also applied some dust overspray. The road is a hard packed dirt road in the winter of 1945. Ice would only make the surface harder. I did look at some photographic evidence.
