M9A1 Halftrack WalkRound

  • CNV00020
a bit of Background

Four manufacturers built the U.S. Halftrack during and prior to WWII - White, Autocar, Diamond T and International Harvester. The overwhelming majority of the latter company's production was exported in the form of Lend-Lease to a variety of users - the U.K, France, the Soviet Union etc.

The subject

The subject of this feature was (in its service days), as far as I can ascertain, an M9a1 in British service. It was manufactured by International Harvester and supplied as part of the U.S. Lend-Lease program. Being an M9a1, the vehicle was built between march 1943 and december of the same year (unless of course it was part of the remanufacturing program of 1945 which created a further 791 vehicles). The M9a1 was principally supplied as an artillery prime-mover for AT or light/medium artillery pieces.

The Photos

The photos were taken in july this year at the Devon Branch of the Military Vehicle Trust's annual rally at Buckfastleigh, Devon, in SW England. It's a small rally, but always manages to have some beautifully restored and unusual subjects present.

Great shots. Did you happen to get any of the rear area? Looks like the tail light section is radically different from an M2/M3/M4 model. With Tanx Heaven MIA (missing in action), this kind of personal photo sharing will be an asset to the sight. Maybe an area can be set aside for just this kind of content. Thanks again for posting these.

Very nice photos. I assume the person who owns and maintains this vehicle must be the king of a given country. How else could he afford the upkeep and transportation on a low boy rig? DJ
