Stalinetz ChTZ S-65

  • move
Piet started with Trumpeters Stalinetz S-65 kit and added the excellent resin engine from LZ models.

As he wanted to portray a tractor that was old and wasted as found in a long forgotten scrapyard somewhere in Russia, Piet painted in a number of layers using the hairspray method between each layer and weathered with oils.

The model was first painted in a base rust color with a layer of hairspray, then painted in factory grey after which the grey was weathered away. After that Matt Humbrol varnish was sprayed and it was covered with faded Russian green, then hairspray and again some paint was removed. Another lay of varnish was added. To make it look like it has seen civilian duty after the war, Piet then added a layer of bright yellow paint which was removed again using the hairspray method, also adding fine scratches at this time. After that the model was heavily weathered again using oil paint and pastels. The upholstery was given a ragged, worn look using lead foil.

The engine was painted in black and gray with parts covered with gray, orange and brown to represent the rust.

This is one of those exceptional examples where, if shown these photos out of context, I’d be quite certain I was looking at the real thing. I can’t remember ever seeing corrosion done better than this - Jacob’s current “Small vignette finished” Marder is also in this rare group but Piet, I’d have to give you 1st prize. Congratulations
