M4A3E8 in Canadian Use during Korean Conflict

Looking for info on the tanks Canada used during the Lorean conflict, in particular, the Strathcona's.

What are you wanting to know?

The tanks came right out of the USMC stocks....very minor modifications done to them while they were being used.....tactical markings and names added, some tanks had field improvised 76 mm ammunition racks added to the rear hull when they were in hill top firing positions, the tanks also have tracks sections added to the turret sides and front hull as add-on armour.

The reference material is spread around over different books....A good book to find is the History of the Royal Canadian Armoured Corps.....most public libraries (at least in Calgary) have a copy in stock.....or you can try Indigo or Chapters $$$. It has good images of the tanks in Korea.

Archer Fine Transfers makes a set of markings for Canadian M4A3E8s in Korea.

The formation symbols stayed the same but the Squadron tactical markings and the tanks names changed as the Squadrons rotated.

Also check Armoured Acorn as there are PDF colour files of the Strathcona Shermans showing the markings.

Brad,

Military Modelling magazine 5th May 2006 features a Canadian Sherman/Dozer model done by Chris Johnson on its cover and an article inside. The vehicle built is "Cuddles" C squadron Lord Strathcona's Horse Korea 1951

Its pretty good with 8 pages covering the history and a good overview of the build and might be worth trying to find a copy for your project.

Outside of the legion in Sydney is a Korean War M4. If I remember correctly, your located in Victoria so its a quick drive to get photos.
I'm not sure what regiment it came from but may have been some of the tanks kept on the island for training during the late 50's early 60's.

IIRC, most of the HVSS Shermans in museums or sitting as gate-guards in Canada are actually diesel powered M4A2E8's that were bought by Canada in the late 40's or early 50's prior to acquiring the Centurion.

Chris' article is exclellent....but remember "Cuddles" was a M4A3 76 (W) VVSS not a M4A3E8.

Like Gary stated...all the the gate guards across Canada are M4A2E8s....none of the Korean War M4A3E8s came back to Canada after the Truce was signed.

Hey Pete....don't be silent...the M4A2E8s used in Canada don't seem to be very well publicly documented....and for that matter neither were the M4A3E8s used in Korea by the Canadians....it's great to see interested in both types of tanks coming out in projects.

M4A2E8 Walkaround
At photobucket.com, search for photos from "ldshrecceboy" there is a complete walkaround of one of 2 runners the Strathcona's have.
