Brian, I think the lens is black. Maybe some highly thinned gloss or semi black? But if you're happy with it and no one else knows...

About IR lenses, I dont know about the larger barrel mounted one, but for the smaller optics, I basecoated with Vallejo silver then a layer of Tamiya clear smoke, then a top layer of clear red.
I was pretty happy with the results.

From what I have read in the past, German IR lenses were usually a dark purple colour, so your mix of red and blue is probably correct.

This is the kit I'll be taking a stab at. One question about camo, can anyone point me in the right direction for detailed pics of the correct colors and pattern for this tank? I want to paint it the same as the box cover.

Greetings all.
Brian, that Panther F is looking great. I built one a while back and went all 'what if' on it as well. The one thing I tinkered with was the idea of putting an IR viewer on the gunner's sight. Turned out a bit clumsy (especially the lens color) but I still enjoyed building the kit.
As for the Panther de Jour, all the zim has been applied, running gear built, track done, and I started work on the PE. A number of wee bits were sacrificed to the carpet monster but I had plenty of leftovers in my spares.
Hope to have the last of the PE done this weekend and on to paint.

Brian, I painted the IR lights with Matt Black then several coats of clear Red, until the desired tone was achieved.

Looks really good - I'll bookmark your photos to use when I build mine.
A couple of comments which I hope will help:
1. The post sticking out of the black antenna base should be bright shiny copper. The antenna was slipped over this post and held on with a screw clamp.
2. The spare track links and the "C" hooks should all have retaining pins through their brackets to hold them in place, and the retaining pins were fitted with a short length of chain to prevent their getting lost.

Ken, we certainly DO NOT want you to leave the Campaign at all it's just when you presented your finished Panther D it was appearing to be YOUR entry for the Campaign.
Maybe it is a case of assumption but we've seen it happen before so we were only throwing caution to the wind in stating no WIP images or starting images were shown. That's all!
It is perfectly okay to show past work IF it is presented that way for all to know and understand. I certainly know a lot of people here work hard on their projects and we do not want anyone to get any hard feelings.

Baby steps: I got a few minutes in this weekend to cut, sand, file, and glue. Here is a shot of the parts that were assembled. I'm hoping to get more time in soon and hit it like gangbusters.

This weekend I will have my starting photos and maybe a little to show too. I've been kicking around the idea of changing my mind (nothing new for me) and possibly building my vintage (not the re-released kit either) Tamiya Panther A in 1/25th scale.
I just feel the need to have a marque tank to display and the Panther A and D are my two most favorite Panther tanks. I think there are some replacement resin tracks for it too, which I will look into. The kits are kinda chunky and clumsy looking so at the same time I will get a set for my same scale SU-100 too.
If I cannot get the tracks I'll go ahead with the Panther II as planned. I have ALL the parts for that!

Luke very few A panthers dont have zimmerit. I have to do it to my dragon A , so maybe do a search in the web.

Brian, Great looking night figthing Panther. Looks awesome! The old IR equipment I had in the army simply had a matte black lens. Thats what I would go for.
Some of the newer Russian stuff actually ligths up red(?!) on their tanks.

I paint my IR lamp lenses black and the lenses of the receiver/converter unit clear.
I've seen pictures where they are tinted like a smoked glass. And I've seen pictures of museum display models with almost clear lenses, as well as one with a blue lens. I've read that the blue lens is wrong.
