The M60 2000.

It was an actual tank offered as an upgrade to the M60 series. I don't think any nation actually bought it though.

Looked more like a British chieftain under all that sheet metal

Check out this link, not American Sniper but I think these are the same vismod tanks, that big oval loop on the front slope and the drivers hatch are the giveaways, along with many other things

Just found this site ..
http://www.imfdb.org/wiki/American_Sniper

Down the list of weapons there is the good ol ma deuce and i took a look at the tank in the fore ground ... its the chieftain for sure as the barrel is exactly the same as the pics in the link which James put up and you can see where the bins where mounted on the front guards .

The hull is definitely an M60 hull. It had the distinctive bulge down the side behind the road wheels as it went by.

Agree w/ Gino here. When I first saw the driver's hatch and front glacis, I thought "Chieftain", but the hull is definitely M60.
Something made up for this movie only?

I don't know guys, if we are still talking about American Sniper I still think it's a Chieftain. Look at the main gun, more specifically the MRS, the road wheels and track, all Chieftain. That, along with the drivers hatch, fenders and front slope, too many Chieftain features. I'm no expert but too much evidence pointing towards British

Holy crap, that is an M60 type hull, but look at the front slope, hatch and main gun??? So confusing, do you think they put a British turret on an American hull or modeled an M1 Vismod using a British Vismod as reference?

Definitely M60. The road wheels, support rollers, shocks and stowage box all give it away.

Lol, first thing I noticed was the Coaxial machine gun being low on the mantlet, then the hull shape. Sucks sometimes to not be able to not see those things.

Not only did the hull look like a M60, it sounded like a M60... I was thinking that it was a M60-2K until I saw the pintle mounted M2 MG vice a CWS with the M2 and no skirts on the side view close up shot.

Ok after seeing those pics i am in agreement now ..its a M60 but that gun looks almost exactly like the one used one the chieftain,,mainly i say this cause of the fume extractor and the barrel warp sensor at the tip of the barrel which looks the same as the link that James put up .
But its most defiantly a M60 ,,those tracks and returns rollers are a dead give away and John mentioned the sound ..the chieftain screams ,,i'd know its sound anywhere .

It kind of irked me that the movie still showed un armored Humvees going out into Sadr city streets in the latter half of the movie and Marines dropping out the back of old M113s when I don't think Marines used that (am I wrong?)nor did anyone venture out into Iraqi streets in those Humvees without some type of armor package installed.
Toward the end they finally got it right with then use of up armored Humvees and an MRAP.
