I have 2 questions actually...1) I'm working on the Tamiya Somua S 35 and really enjoying it, but I'd like to make it as one in North Africa I believe with he 12th Regiment de Chasseure de Afrique. I have a handful of pix and it appears they MAY have had a mottled scheme, though perhaps not all. I'm also interested in the crew uniforms.
2) I'm also working on an Italeri D.U.K.W. and Buffalo for my Dad's birthday as he used to drive them as a R.M. Commando in W.W. II. I've looked and looked but can't find any refs for colours (or cam schemes) nor markings. I thought he was in 40 Commando but I may be wrong about that.
Does any one have any refs, or know where I could find them on the web? Paying for books is not an option I'm afraid.

US Olive Drab No.9 is your best bet for the LVT and DUKW. Not sure on markings but I would guess at them having the usual WD census numbers for the types. I think any LVTs were organic to RM Cdo units so they were probably marked as 79AD.

I'm GLAD that you're not building your S-35 as just another German "Beutepanzer"-

79th Armd Div - it was the administrative owner of the specialist armour in 21st Army Group, which would be lent out to various other formations for the duration of specific operations. For example, it would be a waste of LVTs to have a particular unit using them as day to day personnel carriers (and they are huge targets on land) when they are really only suited to amphibious ops. You don't want them worn out on unsuitable tasks (the tracks were particularly prone to damage on hard surfaces) so that they are unavailable when there is an amphibious vehicle need.

That's certainly true about the Tracks, because of their outer construction. Those twin "U" shaped things, (their exact terminology escapes me at the moment), that were integral to the Track Pads, or Shoes, if you will, wore down and also broke on land. They worked GREAT in the water, and in muddy environs, however...
