Hey guys. Back again.

I'm making Cobra King for my dad for Christmas and I'm really trying to pay attention to detail. I saw in this picture that it has a box or two on the front, and a block of wood supporting them. Also a tow cable.

In these pictures of other modelers' work, it has boxes/tow cable/wood block as well.

So my question is, where would I find these things? I need a tow cable, a wooden block like the one in the pictures, and the boxes in the pictures (at least just the bigger one). Any suggestions welcome.

Hi Ryan,
You might try Eureeka XXL for the tow cable. HTH.

Since I don't have a LHS in my area, I tend to check out the big box stores. I've actually found strips and sheets of basswood at an Ace Hardware. Also, look around the house ... maybe a popsicle stick might be the right thickness? ... Welcome to scratch building!

Hey Ryan,

If I'm not mistaken, the box is a metal 17 pounder ammo box. There is a photo from the front that shows Cobra King with the snow more or less brushed off and you can see the box better. There is only one box on front. I used one from an old Accurate Armour Sherman update set.

Ah Mike, I didn't think to look there. I will see if there is an Ace Hardware near me! If not, maybe some other place... Thanks!

Jeff, I actually bought the Verlinden ammo box set last night as suggested by Jimmy. O: I will consider the Accurate Armor set in the future, but right now I do need these parts ASAP (has to be finished before Christmas) and it looks like the AA set would be delivered from Europe. Thank you for suggesting AA to me though; I wonder if I can find some good German sets there!

It's not hugely clear from the photo but I'd say it's either a P59 or a C70, which was used for (among other things) 25pdr projectiles. It's definitely not a 75mm box, as 75mm rounds were packed in pairs in wood boxes. Nor is it a 17pdr box - these were much bigger and supplied in wood or metal two-round boxes.

I think Verlinden included a couple in a set of boxes but almost all of them were mislabelled and some were post-war designs.

Just seen this post - AA has very speedy service so I don't think you'd be waiting long for orders from there, even overseas. Post does travel by air, you know 😀

The 25lb box comes in the Verlinden set as well.

I think that the metal box might be a metal 57mm/6 pounder ammo box. It would be easier for US tankers to scrounge. US Army in Europe received some HE and APDS rounds from the British.

Thanks all!! I think this will come in handy for later builds if they need more boxes. (: The Verlinden set comes with quite a few boxes!

Alright, got the balsa wood. Cut it down to size...

Then scuffed it up, mixed some colors, and painted it.

What do you guys think?

I'm no Sherman expert but that's looking good!
