If your talking about Tamiya X-21 Flat Base, that is an additive to flatten gloss paint, don't spray I'd alone. If your referring to a different Tamiya product I'm not sure.I have used the Vallejo and found it to be a good product.

My favorite is the Alclad Flat, really a good dead flat finish

Tamiya Flat Base takes some time to figure out ratios that personally work. Vallejo flat varnish is great out of the bottle.

I'm a big fan of Tamiya paint, but I do prefer Vallejo matt varnish over the Tamiya XF-86 Flat clear.

Heh heh -- I just arrived to ask similar if not same question and here it is .
I'm using Vallejo Matt Varnish and I want something more matt -- without having to build too much thickness in the coating .

I've never used the AK Ultra Matte so can't compare to that, but would recommend Daler Rowney Soluble Matt Varnish - available from art supplies shops. Many serious figure painters use and recommend it - and in my humble experience I get a more matt result from the Dale Rowney than I get from Vallejo Matt, Tamiya flat or Testors Dullcote (and it is cheaper as well). Also seems less 'hot' than Tamiya.

But to answer the original question, I get more consistent results from Tamiya than Vallejo - which just doesn't seem as effective in getting that really flat look.

I've got both but swear by the Vallejo one. I don't dilute it when using it on figures and it gives a really nice matt finish without affecting the colours. The Tamiya ones okay on vehicles but not as matt as Vallejo but having said that it may just be me not thinning it properly?

I got some AK Ultra Matt a few days ago ,
Just got around to using it .

Don't see how it could be any better .
Like Vicious says , straight , unthinned into the cup - instant total flat-coat .

No need to look further

Keith (and others in the US)

Where did you get the AK Ultra Matt? Anyone in the States carry it?

Cheers,
Rick

How do you clean up after using the AK Ultra Matte? Just water? Windex? What's the best way to clean your airbrush after spraying? I'm always looking for the 'best' options for paint/coatings, etc., but I am always equally as concerned about how to clean up afterwards. I always prefer to be able to use a medium that is plentiful and cheap (can't beat water, Windex or alcohol for that purpose).

Thank you, sir! I just placed an order for this, and looking forward to using it on the M2A2 Bradley that I am working on. Hope it's as good as it sounds!

Keith,

Got the Ultra Matte on Friday. I haven't yet had the chance to spray it through the airbrush, but I did hand brush a little over a high gloss (Future) coat. I was pleased to see that even with the brush coat, it almost resulted in a fully flat finish. I am convinced, based on this, that spraying it with an airbrush will result in a perfect flat finish. I'm still dealing with some medical issues (broken leg) so not so easy to use the airbrush and clean up, etc. but will do so as soon as I can. I think this was a great recommendation! I think this is going to be the stuff I use going forward, but I've got a bunch of the other flat finish products that I will want to use up (no sense in throwing them away) but the Ultra Matte is what I'll buy when I need any new flat finish product.

Ech - sorry about your leg ,
hope you had fun breaking it , at least

Heh heh -- sounds like you are sold on the AK without even using it
You can always try the polyurethane offerings if you need MORE matt ---- I think there is a limit to " maximum flatness " though

Cheers

Keith,
My bottle came in on Friday as well. I have had a chance to brush out a bit, shoot it through the air brush, and mix a few drops in with some OD in the airbrush. Your recommendation is spot on, this stuff can't be beat. I brushed a bit on next to an area that had been given a shot of Vallejo Matt Varnish; no contest, AK hands down. I tried a bit through the airbrush on one half of the hood of a jeep I'm working on next to some Liquitex Matt Varnish, again AK clearly the winner.
Thanks for the great tip!
Cheers,
Rick

Very cool , Rick
- but Vicious' " death-matt " descriptor pretty much sold me .
told me what I needed to hear .
and he was spot-on .

Ciao
