I like to thin Tamiya paint with laquer thinner. I have and have used other acrylic thinners. The question becomes is chipping more effective with either hairspray or chipping medium [I have both but have only tried hairspray [water based] on and under Tamiya thinned with laquer thinner.

What are the differences [if any] you guys have found and your findings between the two mediums.

If I can save a step or two blundering then I can see this as a win.


I have just had what I would call OK results but felt there was far to much effort to attain the result. I will provide pics once some answers flow into this thread.

I never use lacquer thinner since I do all my painting in the house so I can't speak to that. The only tip I can pass on regarding the hairspray technique is to first seal your base coat thoroughly with Future or something similar and once that is completely cured apply at least TWO or THREE layers of hairspray before applying your topcoat. You'll get much better control of your chipping.
