I have a kit that is calls for tinting some transparent pieces using translucent paint.

Rather than buy translucent paint I am wondering whether adding a small amount of opaque paint to clear varnish would amount to the same thing.

Anyone tried this or have any experience?

Cheers,

Nigel

short answer is yes . -- it will depend on the pigments and binder ratio of the colored coating .
You'll get better results with the old food coloring method or with inks or dyes -- or even watercolors .
I did an entire build ( sci-fi ) painted with only Future colored & tinted with inks and dyes .

Best thing to do is experiment with what you have on hand

Thanks for reminding me about inks. I have a set of those.

Vallejo has a few translucent colors in their stock. You could also buy Vallejo "glaze" & add it to any of their colors to get the same effect.
