Hi, I want to paint a Pz.IV H "615" Wilma & Paula. In one pic, appear that in the inner side of the schurzen appears a "spot" of color.

So, its common to paint the camo inside or its "rare".
BTW, I until now paint a "primer" or only dunkelgelb inside.

Any light?

TIA

Regards from the south,
Alvaro

That spot of color could be nothing more than a stain of some kind. It's possible it was an overspray when the original camo was painted on. Seems to me it would be a waste of material/time to paint camo on the inside surface. On turret schurzen. I don't recall ever seeing photos with camo on the inside surface either.

There was section of skirt found/dung up on the net a few years ago and the inside was just the red primer.

Thanks Jack and Tony. I will paint them with primer as I do with the stug.

While the Werkstatt types might well not camouflage them, I bet they were painted in base colour at the assembly plant or subcontractor, particularly where the inner face was visible. The tone on the front left plate's interior on 615 looks too much like that on the rail and the hull to be primer. Remember that assembly plants had inspectors who would reject product which did not match the specifications.

Might be different on some vehicle types, as examples exist (e.g. Jagdtiger) where the Dunkelgelb was clearly applied with the Schuerzen fitted because missing sections reveal where they masked the primer underneath.

Outward opening hatches were painted in the exterior color (here dunkelgelb). It would make sense then that the inside of schurzen were painted dunkelgelb as well.
I've seen the images of the schurzen Tony mentioned, but without additional info it's a slipery slope concluding anything from them.

Inside of schurzen was normally painted dunkelgelb.

Hello there

I would be wary of painting them in primer. Maybe later but for this particular PZIV I would stick with dunkelgelb. Whether it's got camouflage paint as well, put yourself in the mind of the painter...... what would you do?

Just my two centimes....

Thanks Robert, Matt, Matthew and Sean for yours post.

I will apply dunkengelb and maybe left one in primer for variation.

They should be dunkelgelb on the inside. Also, if the camouflage was field-applied, they might have sprayed it on the inside of the plates there if it were visible/exposed. I doubt they would camo up that area in the factory though.

G'day everybody

OK, I think that question was comprehensively answered. I have another similar question - what colour was the underside of the hull painted, especially vehicles such as the SdKfz 7 where a lot of the underside was visible?

Thanks in anticipation.

For what it's worth, the underside of tank hulls was painted (Panthers at the assembly plant show it to be the same tone as the rest, so Dunkelgelb is a good bet) but after a short period in service, the belly of a tank becomes a streaky mess of mud and surface rust.

As far as I know (and I've not looked closely although I will need to do so soon as my Mercedes L4500 is, unusually, approaching the paint stage), German chassis were painted the same colour as the rest. The Russians opted for black for chassis though.
