Howdy all,
I'm about to start building a Tamiya kubelwagen and 251/1 in DAK colors. Doing this as an excuse to try out my new airbrush and experiment with some new painting and weathering techniques. I'm going to try both hairspray and salt chipping, so what I was wondering is what color would the exposed primer be? Would it be red oxide or dark gray? Any info would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Mike

They would have been primed in red oxide but then factory painted in either Dunkelgrau or the Tropen scheme. The first vehicles arrived at Tripoli in Dunkelgrau and were repainted in theatre but later shipments which had been designated for Tropen use would have been factory painted in the Tropen scheme (8000/7008 or later 8020/7027). Paint applied in theatre would have weathered more quickly than that applied in controlled conditions in Europe but there are instances of visible wear down to a darker colour on the Marder sFl with the 7.62cm, for example, which were Tropen scheme over primer.
