I know some Russian tanks featured external fuel tanks (JS1 and JSII for example) Was there any sort of piping to feed the fuel to the engine or were these just for storage? Either way, seems kind of foolish to have all that fuel just sitting outside your tank waiting to be blown up!

The tanks on WW2 Soviet armour were just for fuel storage and transfer to the internal tanks was a manual exercise.

Don't overestimate the fire risk though - they were diesel, which has a higher flashpoint than petrol/gasoline. Most tank fires following hits are caused by ammunition propellant rather than fuel anyway.

Recently in the UK, a man was working on restoring an iraqi t54. He was going to cut open the external tanks to see if weapons had been hidden there. Something was hidden there, and it wasn't weapons, it was over £1million worth of gold!

The fuel from the external tanks drain into the internal fuel tanks. hence they use up the fuel to get to the battlefield. Upon entering battle they are on internal fuel only.
