OK, I honestly did not plan this! However after posting this thread early today I had to admit to myself I was already wondering if I could scratch build a CHU. I was more than a little pissed off over this whole topic anyway, so I figured "oh what the h%ll", I will just give it a shot and see what happens.

After more than a few hours I think I am now now well on my way. It's less than perfect and I wish I had had more reference to go by but here it is. Still have a lot of work yet to do:

Good initiative!
Keep going and get it finished so that the rest of us lazy types can get it from Trumpeter

Robin I hadn't looked at it that way. My efforts may guarantee that Trumpeter brings out the CHU model next week! GREAT!

Some progress this morning:

I wish I had never drilled those holes. They are supposed to be there but working in that thin plastic stock the hand drill sort of had a mind of it's own and went wild.

Note to Mike:

In the future, use a pin vise. They're swell.

The problem here was that there is heavy square plastic tubing behind that thin sheet plastic. I was using a pin vice but after I got through the thin sheeting the heavy tubing moved the drill bit laterally and made the hole an oblong oval rather then a circle.

Whenever I need to drill a large hole through a sandwich of thin sheet and square tubing, I use a #76 bit to drill a pilot hole. Then, I increase the bit size until it's the correct diameter. Doing it this way guarantees there won't be any bit slippage. Also, I use methylene chloride instead of CA to weld the pieces. Sometimes, cured CA between the parts can cause the bit to slip because it's harder than the styrene.

EUREKA! The CHU works as designed (by the manufacture!)

p.s. The bottom attachments are fixed pins and the top moviable hooks are held by friction. The CHU is easily removed (not glued on) and when completed will also work with the shorter half and three-quarter tall containers.

Over a thousand hits on this new thread in less than 24 hours. I guess there must be a bit of interest in this subject after all!
