Two questions regarding Revell's 1/72-scale kit of the 'Merkava III' ... (1) Is the machine-gun mounted over the mantlet appropriate for a tank in combat, or only during training exercises? (2) What would be the best way of recreating the anti-slip surfaces? I have seen examples of fine sand (over a layer of glue) used on 1/35-scale models, but feel that this would be grossly out-of-scale for 1/72.

Use very, VERY fine grade (like around 1000 - 1500 grit) sandpaper for the anti-slip surfaces.

Good question. The answer depends on the time frame. Some 20 years ago we only used it for training, namely simulating the main gun up to about 1.500 meter which is still within the effective firing range of the .50 cal. The M2 has a relatively low rate of fire which allows single shots. We always removed them before operational deployment.
These days however, they seem to be mounted permanently; their combat usage is probably properly described in the updated doctrine.

I wouldn't bother in 1/72. I think it would look out of scale, no matter what method you try...

In 1/72 scale, maybe a single layer of paint. Mask off the area you really want to have the anti-skid, and spray a light coat. Anything other than that is over scale...
