Seems silly when it is heavily used, widely distributed, and Dragon already makes the Saladin.

Can I say that whilst I have yet to makw my Accurate Armour Saracen I can tell you that it is a lovely kit.

Here is another alternative from Firing Line.
Also somewhat cheaper than the AA one.
Great service from this firm.

I have to disagree that the Saladin 'wasn't all that bad'. No inside hatch detail, fire extinguishers that were totally wrong, no exhaust pipe, incorrect air intake mesh, no canvas cover for the gun etc etc...it was crap and no doubt the Saracen will join the ranks of DML black label crap. I notice that they make no mention of the tires, no doubt because they are the same horrible soft DS from the original kit. The Saladin was the last DML kit I ever bought. The worst of it is, other manufacturers will now be unlikely to do their own version which will be a shame. I imagine Takom or Meng would do a really nice job of both vehicles (and also the Stalwart). Rant over.. (can you tell I was disappointed?)

Is Tamiya's Saladin any better? And BTW DEF Model makes replacement wheels.

The Tamiya Saladin is a very rare vintage kit nowadays.

All the items you mention are relatively minor things to correct and no worse then many, many kits out there. As for the DS wheels, they are still useable, but as mentioned there are replacements available. The kit is relatively accurate and that is the important part. And the items you’ve mentioned are all corrected by update sets from MR Models and HCKW, if you don’t want to scratchbuild.

Short answer re Tamiya Saladin, No!

I have made two of them and have two Dragon Saladins in my stash complete with updates.

no canvas cover for the gun

They include it now. I actually got two in my kit... But it isn't even mentioned in instructions.

The Tamiya kit was great , for its time . IRC it came out around 1973, (I built mine in 1976 ) . The lower hull was wider to fit the batteries as it had a motor , and lots of scale detail was lacking . That being said ,the rubber wheels on mine are still in great shape , no drying out , cracking or turning into a gooey mess . Not bad for a 40 odd year old kit

Incidentally, I was interested in the Saracen for my Dr. Who scenario. I figured it would be ideal as I can assume that UNIT would likely be issued older obsolescent equipment for its operations. After all, they've only had to deal with low-level alien invasion problems for the most part.

truth be told it was accurate in basic outline and shape but not in any level of accuracy or detail expected from a kit of that price. It was missing all hatch interior detail, Missing a lot of simple turret detail like rain splashguards, It completely missed the Exhaust manifol and the detail on the actaul exhaust was so removed from the real thing to be not amusing. Good detail kits exist but not one I know of offers the Exhaust manifold where it leaves the hull and feeds the Muffler
