Hi all
I've got a question regarding the paints the Brits used on their AFV's in WW2...how durable were the paints used in the Western Desert & other Med theatres, specifically Light Stone/Portland Stone? I'm toying with Academy's Alamein Grant kit, & rather than overpaint a base of Olive Drab with Light Stone or Portland Stone, I just drove straight in & painted the wheels/suspension in their desert colour. Now that I think about it, I'm curious if the wheels/suspension wouldn't show more of the desert colour abraded away due to the environment, with the 'as supplied' Olive Drab showing through...

Not sure about the paint, but the whole vehicle might be subjected to abrasion from wind-blown sand that would affect raised edges. If you go that route, I find a combo of sponge and dry-brush with the undercoat colour can be made to look really good. What I recall of seeing pics of the wheels/suspension is mostly dirt in the nooks & crannies...

What photographs are you using as references? Is there a question of interpretation of what you are seeing?

Since they were repainted you can choose final look as you are pleased without anyone saying you are wrong.

Bogi,
Those are marvelous scenes! I knew 8th Army had some Lees but I have never seen one in "sand." The scene with the Honeys, note the overspray on the tracks, sprockets, idlers and bogies. The turret close-up shows paint on the .30cal. barrels.
