Hi all,
I have used AK Sinai Grey 1982 on my Shot Cal Gimel. I must say I'm surprised by the result.
Is this color reference any accurate? (I know it's a bit late to ask )

Here is a picture of the hull.

Taking into account everyone's screen may be a little different, that color is WAY too dark. Try SAC Bomber Tan cut 50/50 with Header White, both by Testor's.

It yields this:

Humbrol Khaki Drill #72 is also very close.

Olivier,

Mark Hazzard (posts here as "hazzradm") would know and may reply if he spots this; if not, you could always send him a PM. He is a very accomplished Israeli armour modeller and I am sure, will be able to advise.

Sorry - reference my last, Mark's callsign should read "hazzardm" (fingers clearly not fully connected to my brain!)

Robert, that was my first thought. It's too dark.

Brian, thank you for the input.

I added a good deal of XF-57 Buff to the AK color to get it lighter.
I guess it is better now for the 1982 time frame.

The AK color shade is almost spot on for the time period BUT one has to take into account the sand/dust that accumulated over the vehicles as they moved through the terain. That is why the second paintjob looks more "realistic in scale" for a weathered vehicle.

The IDF gave up on sand shaded paint in the mid '70s and went for a more grayish/greenish paint.

You could have continued with only the AK paint as a base color and use filters and weathering to get the end result.

The sandy painted vehicle posted though is way off, looks almost like a 6 Days War vehicle

Agreed. The current IDF scheme is a slightly revised version of the one used in the early '80s. I have the impression that the original color in the '80s had a significant grey tint to it. AK's offering probably matches factory-fresh color. Taking scale-effect and fading into account, it should be about 20-30% lighter. I think you've nailed it.

Thank you for the feedback.
I'll continue with this shade. I intend to dust the tank quite a lot so it could be even lighter after the weathering.
