Wikipedia says that production of the British Universal Carrier was continued until 1960 but I wondered if it were a mistake. I thought it would have been long obsolete by then, even for export.

Other sources confirm that. At 110,000, it even surpassed the T-34 in number of units built.

Wonder how they were used then. Perhaps they were more useful than the Osprey book implied.

Hi,
I think "in production" & "in service" have become mixed up.

I had heard of these being used around high country sheep stations in the South Island of New Zealand up to the 80s. And seen a running example only a couple of years ago, too. A farm I go to has a couple of track runs slowly rotting in the paddock.

The Irish Army used them into the 60's. Some were sent to defend Dublin Airport at the time of the Cuban Missile crisis.

The Belgians used them into the 60's as well, they even fitted a 90 mm gun to their LLoyd carriers.. called them CATI

Post war use :

The last Swiss Army ones (Canadian-built T16's ) were phased out in 1965...
