After some much needed time off. I've decided to get back into scale modelling.
I had amassed such an enormous collection over the years, it was stressing me out to the point I couldn't even start anything, let alone finish anything. I sold it all so I could start over with a clean slate
So now I'm going about it with a new approach - One kit at a time (I know, sounds almost sacrilegious).
Yet, I have no idea where to start. I used to focus on WWII German tanks. However, I'm definitely more into artillery pieces, the bigger the better (no tracks, so tired of tracks).

Preferably I'd like to start with something that I could make OOB and still look really good, I'd consider 1 AM kit, but nothing overboard. I prefer 1/35 or larger. Modern/WWII/WWI, Axis/Allies, Plastic/Resin, it really doesn't matter. I got rid of all my scratch styrene so preferably nothing that needs a lot of cosmetic work.
My last kit I built was the Big Bertha. Before that the Takom Skoda 30.5cm. Both were really good kits.
Any thoughts?

I am enjoying the Tamiya 1/35 JGSDF Type 16. Goes together well, nice detail and movable steering

Devin,

If you are definitely more into artillery pieces, I would recommend you AFV Club's 8.8 cm FlaK 18(#AF35088).

It is the iconic German WWII gun, it builds perfectly OOB and if you allow yourself into just 1 AM set, you can always go for a metal gun shield.
Not that kit's plastic one is bad- it is thin enough, plus a lot of these guns were used without having the shield mounted.

Just my 2 cents,

Take care,

Well, if you want artillery and bigger is better, then you can't get much bigger than Dragon's Leopold rail gun. Got one in the stash myself.

If you don't want to go quite that big, Trumpeter's 17/21cm K18 build into hefty models.

Trumpeter's M198 Howitzer is nice right out of the box; comes with a small PE fret too. It is a medium sized piece when doen too, but still looks impressive.

Unknown manufacturer, I Love Kit??
M65 Atomic Annie, available via ebay:

Seller and kit is legit, this is NOT a blowup of the 1/72 kit by Dragon / Black Label

Apart from the above there is a whole bunch of smaller calibres and resin kits of WW I artillery.
Lots of AA-guns. Since you ruled out tracked chassis almost all of the SP artillery is out.

Loved that kit - so easy to build even with the small fiddly bits.

This was impressive, but boy are Trumpeter kits a PITA! All the sink holes and ejector marks. Now a days there just isn't an excuse for all their ejector marks, they don't even try to hide them on the inner sides sometimes. I had the trumpeter Leopold at one time as well. I built the main gun up but the rail cars were so much work it sucked all the enjoyment out of it.

I've had my eye on the AFV Club 203mm. Every kit I've had of theirs had been great to build. I don't know if it is because of the softer plastic or what.

Thanks to everyone else for their suggestions as well.

Seriously considering the Type 16 as well.

Go the whole hog and get a 1/35 Dora

I had that at one time too!
Unfortunately, based on the reference material I had and what I could find online, almost nothing from the kit is accurate.
It would still build up to be an impressive kit, but it was in need of so much work!

Since you don't seem to be afraid of big/expensive kits
http://www.panzerconcepts.com/html/bruno_nue.html

Also available as the WW I shorter barreled versions.

P.S. The desire for accuracy can really cramp ones style sometimes. Reference materials can be two-edged swords

Nice. I didn't even know this was out there and will have to strongly consider it (might need to save up a little)

I agree, I'd say the advent of the internet and more readily available reference materials has destroyed more models-in-progress than the occasional drop or cat!

Dnepro Models make an Italian 38cm railway gun:
https://www.dnepromodel.com/Italian_38140_Railway_Gun_135_NEW/p877256_19694822.aspx
I don't have any experience with Dnepro models (they do a bunch of interesting trucks) so I CAN NOT comment on their quality.

Pull 20 kits out of your stash. Place them close together...no order. Blindfold yourself. Build the first one picked.

That's what I used to do but it never worked.
But now, there is no stash. Complete blank slate! There are a couple of kits that need some finishing touches but if I haven't gotten around to them by now, they will forever live unfinished.

He sold all of his old stash otherwise the "randomiser" method would be good advice.

Another option is to pick something simple (not necessarily small since a motorbike could lead the unwary astray by tempting one to make proper spoked wheels) that would be easy to build and paint (desert sand M1A1 or M1A2 for instance).

If the theme is artillery I would suggest picking 10 possible candidates and then pick a random one.
Stick little notes to a dartboard, pull little notes from a bucket, throw them in the air, close your eyes and pick one from the floor ...

Well,
then you can fancy the modern Russian Naval Gun AK-130 as a 1/35th stand-alone model, courtesy of Takom.
Or the Kashtan Missile System from the same producer.

They're quite recent kits, so probably were not part of your past stash

Best thing to do is pick up to five kits and do a vote on here and see which wins
You don't have to purchase them just show box art.

I'm thinking of wanting to build the 21 cm Mörser 18 from the Germans. I had build a 1/72 scale variant. But did get rid of it and I'm thinking of wanting to do a 'rebuild' project of it, but in 1/35 scale. Trumpeter is one of the only ones I have spotted so far with this kit.

I built up the 17cm version which shares much of the same kit.
My biggest gripes were 2 things:
1. so many small fiddly parts that didn't go together so cleanly
2. the ejector pin marks in the main support structure

I got the aftermarket Al barrel which was really nice.
Another omission from the kit is the anti recoil "claw". I believe it is included in the Revell 1/72 kit. I scratch built one for 1/35, but it looks a little too large.

It is an impressive kit, don't get me wrong. But it was a little high stress for me...

I like that idea!
I just need to decide if I want to go big (rail gun)
or more manageable like towed artillery.

I may suggest Bronco Flak41, a wonderful kit. Absolutely accurate, enough photoetch included and quite decent size.

Only minus, it has lots of tiny parts.
