I'm trying to improve, and I don't yet feel as if I'm able to get satisfying results with weathering as I'd like.

In particular with oils and pigments. Oil streaking giving me grief, and so is knowing which pigment/wash combo to use.

So I'm wondering if anyone knows of websites or videos that are helpful here. Or books.

Dan (sorry for all of the posts).

There are many and it's easy to feel overwhelmed. I'm on a strategy to minimize how many different of these things I use.

I'm sure others will have good suggestions. I'd like to suggest the VMS website. VMS is a vendor and is demonstrating his products. I have no experience with any of his products, yet. But his website is remarkable in terms of finding stuff, seeing what it looks like on models, and then having videos demonstrating how to use it.

I have no affiliation with him, but I do have an order in for a few things to try out.

The only stupid question is the one not asked.

YouTube has got a lot of channels dedicated to model building, finishing and painting.

Here are a few I visit

Andy's hobby headquarters

https://m.youtube.com/channel/UChnAgeghaNKLdftbfJY8zNA

4guevara on-line

https://youtu.be/lg5ptgfazuQ

Scale model Jedi

I'm going to bed right now but I'll post more when I get up.

Just hit the subscribe button on the video some these are quite.

I'll talk to you later when I wake up

I find MIG's "The Weathering Aircraft" and their "The Weathering Magazine" to be very helpful in starting out..... Different approaches with different tools. Pick something and give it a go. I'm still learning!

If you have an iPad you can download them a bit more economically and I travel a lot so I have access to them anywhere!

I experiment with each kit!

Good Luck!!

Dan,
You’ll get as many suggestions, websites, books and tutorials as there are modelers out there. But the best one I’ve found so far is Panzermheister36’s Top 5 Weathering Techniques for Beginners, which I’ve linked below:

5 best weathering techniques for beginners:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pNcUJ0BACO4

It’s a YouTube video showing most of the common approaches to weathering. Personally, I find most of my weathering products in hobby and craft stores, a selection of Mona Lisa oil paints, sponges, brushes, pallets and odorless thinner. Take a look at Panzermeister’s techniques.

I try. Just take the time to watch the whole video, It’s well thought out, and well narrated to show you specific techniques using oils and a few other weathering mediums. It’s the best explanation I’ve run across in many years of model building. Without having to wade through a lot of other “Build Stuff” (BS). 😆

Hi Dan,

Adam Wilder produces many types of weathering products - oils, pigments, acrylic and solvent-based. He has an extensive gallery of how-to videos. One series is 27 (!) videos showing how he weathers a Kv-1.

This video is less than 5 minutes and introduces his weathering oils in a tongue and cheek way: WEATHERING OILS

This one is 12 minutes: Tutorial: Oil Weathering Effects for Panzer Grey Model Tanks Wilder YouTube

Here is a list of reviews here on KitMaker: https://railroadmodeling.kitmaker.net/modules.php?op=modload&name=Reviews&file=index&req=showmaker&makerid=1338

Here's a couple more sites I watch, some mainly for kit reviews but they do have tips.

Again, I’ll say it. There are as many tips, techniques and videos out there as there are modelers. Adam Wilder has done a lot for the oil weathering community, and I very much appreciate his work, as well as that of other artists. I think the original poster is looking for a basic tutorial. Panzermiester36’s is the most succinct, to the point and clear tutorial I’ve seen so far. He uses some of Wilder’s products, but I maintain, as Panzermeister does, you don’t necessarily need to use “name brand model related” products to get a good result. As I mentioned, I go to my local art store (or Michaels, Hobby Lobby, or my local hobby shop), and using my discount coupons, I buy my materials there (although I’ll admit, I have some Abteilung and Wilder oils in my paint box). But I achieve the same weathering results with those simple lower priced materials as others do with more “commercial hobby” labeled products. A case in point is my review build article on the Roden Holt tractor below:

https://armorama.kitmaker.net/review/14507

Almost all of the weathering was accomplished using inexpensive oil techniques explained in the video I’m touting above. Frankly, I get tired of looking at endless videos of different ways to do techniques, or showcasing models or products. I find it’s best to find a way, and then stick to it. I’ll admit it, I’m a shameless promoter of Panzaermiester36s simple and straightforward weathering videos. I’m just a simple guy, and all this YouTube stuff confuses me.
