Hi Jim:

This is a very cool and interesting subject, but I wonder whether a generator would be needed to show this in action, or did they have some sort of internal power source?

Looks like a nice little kit and I was wondering about the power supply too. Wouldn't it be likely that it's a truck mounted generator and that's the vehicle that would tow the searchlight into place?

According to the info I've found on Lonesentry.com , this searchlight is used with an 8-kilowatt generator that gives the required current at 85 volts. It is connected to the searchlight by a cable 110 yards long. The truck that tows the searchlight trailer also carries the generator, which can "either be operated in the body of the truck or be unloaded on the ground".
DesKit has released a resin 1/35th kit of the german 8 Kw generator (kit #35098):
