Review

I do not have this model from Hobby Boss, and so I am only able to make observations on the supplied metal barrel offering from RB Model. The barrel from RB Model has a raised surround around the muzzle, this I believe is to strengthen the barrel at this point; I am very happy for someone to correct me on that belief. The RB Model barrel dimensions are as follows;
  • Length = 54.4mm
  • Muzzle depth = 6.8mm
  • Muzzle bore = 2.5mm
  • Muzzle diameter = 3.55mm
  • Barrel tapers 3.57mm down to 3.26mm
  • Length of muzzle guard = 6.92mm

The depth of the bore is acceptable and should easily disguise the fact that the barrel is not hollow along its entire length. The rifling inside the barrel is very very subtle and does not rotate as in the real barrel, the detail is so fine that I did not detect it with my own eyes and had to use magnification. The finishing of the barrel is of a good standard and should look very good when installed and painted on the model. The pin on the barrel for installation to the mantlet is quite short and fine, and so I suggest care is taken to prevent any bending of the pin during application which may result in a bent appearance to the barrel.

Conclusion

I cannot comment on the accuracy of this barrel, but I have no doubt that it will result in an improved look to the finished model. The price of the barrel is attractive as it is very affordable.
SUMMARY
Highs: I like turned metal barrels as they do away with the need to hide seam lines that can be an issue with plastic barrels.
Lows: None that I am aware of.
Verdict: An affordable and easily applied kit improvement.
