introduction

The Maxim was one of the earliest weapons that employed a recoil operated firing system. It was belt fed and water cooled. Despite its bulk and weight it was a popular weapon that provided a rate of fire of 600 rounds per minute. Such was the success of the original design many countries applied for the rights to build their own weapons.

This release from ICM is a later 1941 Model that saw service during World War 2. The model arrives in quite a large box for a single weapon.

review

ICM have released a number of interesting models, this release is no different. The box contains three sprues moulded in tan styrene.

Considering the size of the model there a large number of parts. The MG is made up of 19 parts with an additional 5 parts for the ammunition boxes and ammunition belt.

The MG has been cleverly depicted as the muzzle has been moulded as a separate part, the muzzle has a hollow tip. The MG also has a separate rear ladder sight. The modeller has the choice of either assembling the carriage in the transport position or the firing position.

Close examination of the parts reveals that the moulding is fine and there is some very fine flash on a number of parts. The flash can be easily removed during assembly. The modeller will need to be cautious when removing the smaller parts from the sprues to avoid damaging them.

The instructions detail the colours to be used for the MG with the majority of the weapon being painted in Field Green.

conclusion

A big box for a small model, it does provide the modeller with either a simple accessory for the corner of a diorama or to add to a group if figures.

ICM have released an iconic often seen weapon as used by the Russian Army during World War 2. It has a number of very fine details although the MG belt may prove difficult to shape.
SUMMARY
Highs: A number of finely moulded details, the ammunition belt is finely moulded.
Lows: As there is only one MG some could feel that this is expensive.
Verdict: Recommended for all Soviet infantry and diorama fans

I began modelling way back when Matchbox appeared on the scene with their new range. It began an interest in a hobby that has spanned 40 years.... and has seen the greatest resurgence in recent years. The only breaks in the hobby have been for the usual reasons that most modellers experience; caree...

Sharp looking model. Just look at that molded strap on the ammo can!

Considering the MG kit is the same price as a four figure set, including weapons and gear, then it is a little expensive. ICM should have included two in the kit. Or at least a two man gun crew!

I have to agree, I would have liked two MG's in the box or more ammo cans. It is a cracking little kit and ICM should be congratulated for this release.
