RMG Resin Models has sent Armorama samples of their cables for replicating tow cables on vehicles of all types. The samples sent cover four sizes of cable which are 0.6, 0.8, 1 and 1.2mm.
These cables are all supplied in a length of 700mm, they are supplied coiled inside Ziploc bags with a card hanger, the card hanger also contains the information reference cable size the cables are described as ‘steel rope line’ but it is clearly identified as a copper cable on the packet. The decision of RMG Resin Models to use copper is an excellent choice as it uncoils and takes shapes very easily with the minimum of effort, this will allow the cable to easily take the shapes required by the modeller, be that placed around attachment points on a vehicle or sag where the cable is loose or hanging down. The cable may be copper but is burnished in appearance, I guess this has been done via a chemical process.
The cable itself appears to be six cables wrapped around a seventh, judging from the dissection I performed; this does result in a very realistic appearance to the cable. The softness of the cable is a blessing and a curse when it comes to cutting the cable to length for use, the reason being that it is easily crushed when being cut. With that said as the cable ends are to be inserted in holes in the cable eyelets this aspect does not really matter. Compared to the stiff wires supplied by some companies and the string supplied by others this product is a blessing that we could all do with having a selection of on the modelling shelf.
These cables from RMG Resin Models are realistic to my eye, they are easily shaped and are available in a selection of six diameters. The length the cable is supplied in should be enough for at least a couple of models, and so it gives you time to order replacements as needed. The only possible downside to this product could be price as I do not know what they cost.
Highs: These cables are flexible, realistic and a good selection of sizes available.Lows: There are no negatives I am aware of at this time.Verdict: Well worth having a selection to hand if like me you hate the cotton cables included in some kits or struggle with the stiff cables offered by some others.
