Sd.Kfz.251/1 Ausf. D

by: DMD [ DMD ]

Introduction story about the German Sd.Kfz. 251/1 Stuka zu FussIt was shortly after the invasion of Russia in 1941, that the German Wehrmacht began to seriously consider a necessity of increasing firepower in their motorized infantry formations. By applying some simple modifications to he Sd.Kfz. 251 infantry half-track, they partially fulfilled this requirement. One of these variants was designated the "Sd.Kfz. 251/1 mit Wurfrahmen" (the Sd.Kfz. 251/1 with launching frames). It was adapted for six, externally mounted frames housing short-range rockets of 28cm and 32cm size. The wooden or metal rocket containers were used as shipping crates during transport, and were attached to base plates on the sides of the vehicle for firing. Aiming direction was provided by pointing the vehicle at the target. Two rods were attached on the front of the engine hood, to help the driver align the vehicle on the target. Elevation was adjusted by changing the angle of the container mounting plate. The rockets were fired electrically from inside the vehicle. With an effective range of more than 2000 meters, the rockets provided the German infantrymen with effective fire support against close in area targets. This highly effective half-track was affectionately called the "Stuka zu Fuss", or Stuka on foot, taken from the German Ju87 series dive bombing aircraft.

IN-BOX
A huge box for such a lovely vehicle. If you can buy it at a large discount like I did it's truly worth spending your money on it.
The basic of the kit is a regular Sd.Kfz.251/1 ausf. D, which is updated with some launching-frames which can house short-range rockets. So if you don't like those rockets in the end, you can always skipped them during progress without seeing marks on the vehicle.
The model himself is a quick builder and is an easy starter for rookies and needs no sanding at all . The interior detail of the halftrack is simplified !! an example is the missing first aide box, ..... but still it's fair and much better then there first halftrack. So if you are not pleased with this interior which is fair in a way buy update sets.
An advantage here are the wheels, they can roll, steer and pivot. Ideal for giving live action for a diorama.
The bad thing and to be honest I expected that are the tracks. I’m not keen on this. They are the same tracks like in the stone-ages of modeling: no surface and very tight, which can give the option of breaking a wheel during installation. Tamiya is warning to be careful not to break thin parts but no word on those tracks.
Also something strange is the backdoor in one part !! but just do I like me cut them in half and your problem is solved

THE LAUNCHING CRATES
Well, those are really good, and there's even a methode to make them quicker without getting frustrade with the little parts. So a good thing for beginners. In this kit you have six 28cm Rockets and two 32 cm Rockets, so it's a slight advantage in detailling.actually I've tought getting more accesoires, but the only thing you get are 2 buckets. Dissapoints me in a way but I guess buckets where handy in a war.

THE FIGURES
In this set you get 4 figures, well this true in a way, you actually get 2 duplicated sprues, wich have extra arms and leggs to get slightly diffrent poses, but still they all look like one big familie. So with all those extra parts i'm sure we can make them diffrent. The facial and pose expression is fair, old tamiya style so you all know what to expect.I really recommend this kit if you can buy it at a discount, it's an easy kit to put togheter so go for it
