Herpa debuts agricultural machinery for N-trackers (1/160 scale) with the 1958 Deutz D40 L tractor. The model features printed details and consists of many components. With the growing popularity of N scale, farm machinery is high on the “want list.”

Deutz D40 L tractor

This new agricultural vehicle was manufactured by Deutz AG, manufacturer of innovative internal-combustion engines, from 1958 until 1965. A total of 33,500 Deutz D40 L were built. It belonged to the mid-size executive range and was very popular among farmers. Deutz produced agricultural machines like combines as well as commercial vehicles such as lorries and buses. Deutz eventually sold the agricultural machinery division to the Italian company SAME. Under SAME, the tractors are marketed as Deutz-Fahr, and Deutz-Fahr tractors have been distributed in North America since the early 1960s.

In the Box

This model continues the Herpa tradition of quality. The Deutz D40 is fully assembled and packed in a light plastic form-fitted tray, surrounded by a light card label, and secured in a light plastic box with opening ends.

The molding is good. However, there does appear to be a sinkhole on the frame just below the drivers seat. The paint is thin, opaque, and glass-smooth. The grill, lights, wheel hubs, and rollover bar are hand painted, to a high standard. Some of the details are printed. Herpa does not use decals.

This tiny tractor has open areas on the main tire hub per the prototype. Engine detail is well represented for the scale. The underside boasts molded crankcase and transmission detail. Brake lights and reflectors are molded. The delicate exhaust system, rollover bar, and highlights are separable applied, as is the steering wheel. The model demonstrates finesse for 1/160.

This is a high quality model that demonstrates why Herpa models are highly regarded. The finish and detailing demonstrate finesse. It will enhance any N model scene. Highly recommended.

Please remember, when contacting vendors and manufacturers, to tell them you saw their product here--on RailRoadModeling!
Highs: Several separately applied parts. High detail for such a diminutive model.
Lows: Some of the molded engine detail is soft.
Verdict: The finish and detailing demonstrate finesse. It will enhance any N model scene.
